“Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.”

Quote of the Day:

“Television has done much for psychiatry by spreading information about it, as well as contributing to the need for it.”

Alfred Hitchcock

  1. quantum computing
What I dearly want to know and understand about quantum computing is
NOT that a qbit represents a range of states. I already understand that
a quantum computer guesses a solution.

Guessing a solution is pointless. The trick is that a good quantum computer
guesses a correct solution. And again, as every single article I have read, this one is completely silent about the one critical question.

  2. It’s the potential
It’s the potential “disturbances” of the qubit state that could initially be the most revelatory. In working out the ambient factors that impinge on the qubit intergrity there may be many revelations about things in the environment we did not know existed.

    1. indeed
Right, the critical question is how do the qubits converge on a more difinitive value, rather than just contain the whole range. Stating a solution in terms of the whole range between 0 and 1 is trivial. Arriving at actual values is the trick.

  3. A Surrealistic Moment
How LSD ‘Microdosing’ Saved Ayelet Waldman’s Marriage
    http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/07/style/microdosing-lsd-ayelet-waldman-michael-chabon-marriage.html

This part made me burst out laughing, massively, so I had to share it.
As her husband, the novelist Michael Chabon, slept and her teenage son and daughter slumped over the breakfast table, Ms. Waldman did not feel a trace of morning surliness, or of the suffocating depression that had dogged her for months.

Rather, she says, with the perkiness of a morning-show host, she chirped about the loveliness of the blue skies and hummed upbeat ditties as she whipped up banana-strawberry smoothies. She even offered to braid her daughter’s hair. It was all so out of character that her children spoke up.

“Mom, are you on acid?” her daughter asked sarcastically.

Ms. Waldman froze. It was not yet the moment, she decided, to answer “yes.”

What I love about the article is that it is under the “Style” section and “Books”, so it has the usual comments about how she is dressed and where the interview is occurring. This is such a surrealistic moment when you consider the history of LSD.
“I didn’t do this on a lark,” she said, wearing black yoga pants and a fleece jacket over breakfast at Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain, a retro-style diner in Carroll Gardens, on a recent visit to New York. “I did this because I was afraid I was going to kill myself.”
This is clearly not “I Have America Surrounded” HA!
