The Radioactive Boy Scout

What happens when a Boy Scout decides to get his “Atomic Energy” badge? Check out the story of David Hahn, the ‘Radioactive Boy Scout’, who in 1994 attempted to build a fast breeder nuclear reactor in his backyard shed in in Detroit.

As a postscript, in 2007 – four years after this documentary went to air – Hahn was charged with stealing smoke detectors, most likely to use as a source of radioactive materials for further experiments. His mug shot at that time showed his face pock-marked with open sores, probably caused by exposure to radiation.

Sure, he seems bat-poop crazy, but you can’t argue with that can-do attitude…

    Definitely a reality hacker :3

Though why he would try to steal smoke detectors is beyond me — they are SO cheap nowadays.

      Did someone just mention…

      SCIENCE?????

Bill Nye is a science popularizer from the Seattle, WA area who used to have his own show. Nice to see an adult who isn’t afraid of being goofy. I was delighted when, one night while watching CNN on the Japan kerfuffle, I saw him being used as an Expert!

Yeah, shame he’s also a supposed ‘expert’ UFO skeptic, despite not knowing much about the topic at all. Though most people that sign on to be a CSI(COP) Fellow tend to be that way…

See this story I posted a while back about this ‘UFO skeptic’.

          Greg,

*chuckle* Oh Oh, Bill Nye is a sinner :3

(I wonder if Tim Minchin is ever going to be made into an expert on TV?)

I wouldn’t know aboot him being an expert — I don’t know if, on sombunall media, there is an attempt to bring in someone and they are automatically an ‘expert’; Bill Nye was talking aboot the Power Plants in Japan and I don’t think his expertise is in Nuclear Powah. So, I think we, the audience, when watching these media shows, put them in the role of expert (because it is part of the media social game that anything that is said in a news program is said by Smart and Skilled people).

(and yeah, more wisdom in saying “That’s interesting, now lets see where we can go with this…” when operating from no knowledge)

And sure, sombunall people in CSI(COP) are ‘that way’ — its simple tribalism.

Like the yank Bruce Sterling was supposed to have said, “The future is here, it just isn’t evenly distributed.” Certain things that were fringe become mainstream. I think that things like UFOs, NDEs and spirits are mainstream and, of course, there will be ‘hold outs’ who live in some thinktribal backwater who haven’t progressed.

One of my friends liked Beakman’s World more…but it didn’t fit with my feng shay, the show is like cocaine on energy drinks whilst sky diving…

          1. Experts and Explainers
I’m pretty sure the main reason why Nye is used as guest to provide the science angle of a story, is not because his high expertise, but because he makes a living explaining scientific terms in laymen terms.

Sagan might not have been the most expert astronomer of his time, but he’s highly regarded as one of the best science popularizers ever. Whereas the legend goes that Newton and Kepler used to bore their poor students to death with their inane mumblings and vague lessons!

So back to Nye, the producers probably think that if this guy is good enough to explain science to 10-year-old, having him on a show guarantees 90% of the audience will not change the channel while scratching their heads 😛

Now, obviously, that doesn’t give him the right to appoint himself as an expert in everything. Specially with the UFO phenomenon, where there are NO experts —just researchers more informed with the particulars of the phenomenon 😉
