News Briefs 19-05-2010

Enjoy.

Thanks Greg.

Quote of the Day:

I believe that you can reach the point where there is no longer any difference between developing the habit of pretending to believe and developing the habit of believing.

from Foucalt’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco (Amazon)

  1. Everest climbers and Icarus
    From the article:
Mallory and Irvine perished near the summit during their expedition, leaving many wondering whether they had successfully scaled Everest.
If they reached the summit (which we don’t know at this point), but perished (which we do know), is not fair to day that the successfully scaled Everest?

  2. antimatter – black is white
History is written by the winners. We are made of antimatter. The real matter was viciously destroyed long ago, and only our propaganda calls it antimatter.

  3. todays news
good news today. but now i’m terrified that guys wearing underwear on the outside of their pants coming down and killing me and all of my spiritual allies 😉

  4. Avia rocks
What’s Your Sign is a great website indeed.

I may have a soft spot for tattooed biker chicks, but the way Avia explains her interest in symbolism and meaning rings true:
As a kid, I was always outside, poking sticks at stuff, peeking under slimy rocks, gleeful at discovering some dark treasure (the creepier and crawlier the better).

Today, I’m still exploring, but instead of rocks, I’m flipping over every-day-ness to find magic and inspiration hiding beneath common reality.
Lovely allegory for living life (even if these days, I’m the one hiding under a rock!). Careful where you poke that stick… 😉

Did you have a look at the Endicott Studio link, bhc? Alas, their Journal of Mythic Arts is no more, but it has plenty of content to keep you busy if you’ve only just discovered it; and if you’re a returning regular reader, plenty to rediscover.

    1. Signs
Yes I too have used her site as a reference for my thoughts on many occasions. In fact I have made many discoveries in astrology in part thanks to the symbolism, particularly relating to plants, minerals and animals, available on her site. A wolf and damn proud of it.

      1. Woodpecker
A wolf and damn proud of it.
Is that Native American? I’m a woodpecker, which explains why I’m always headbutting closed doors…

I get different answers in Celtic astrology (did they even have a system comparable to the Western or Chinese zodiac?); cat or horse. The tree system is interesting. I’m a Holly; a bit prickly, but people still want to kiss me.

        1. Zodiacs
Wolf Native American; Snake Celtic; Rabbit Chinese and so on. I have found an interesting link between the animals which occur in three month folds. Starting with January (Otter) and going in three month intervals, you can link the animals (Example: Otter, Raven, Deer). The people who occur in these zodiacal triangles are usually connected by belief, history, and or symbolism based on the traditions of that culture’s zodiac. Wolf, Woodpecker, and Snake occur together. It’s fun to see if you have something in common with the people you become friends with or who have guided your philosophies.
