Face on Mars Googlified

Google Earth 5 has been released, with a slew of new features which take you beyond the ‘earth’ and into the sea…and further. Google Earth now incorporates ‘Google Mars’ as well. The coolness abounds:

The tour above doesn’t go visit the ‘Face on Mars’, but it’s well worth checking out. Most people have seen the imagery released by NASA showing the Face in more detail, but there’s nothing quite like flying around and zooming in wherever you want. I was going to create a screencast, but then I decided (a) I didn’t have time, and (b) you’re all big people who can download Google Earth and do it yourself. So instead, here’s just a quick screenshot. Click for a larger version:

Remember too that you can use Google Earth as a sky-viewing program, to help spot constellations, stars and planets in the night sky from your location. A great program for kids (even those with decades on Earth under their belt).

WWT is great for looking at stars etc. but you do need to know your way around the sky. It also has a very good collection of images from NASA space missions, which on closer examination reveal some strange objects.

The first of these can be found as follows:

    Collections/panoramas/Apollo 17/Shorty Crater.
look at Long: 98.10.01, Lat: 02.55.01
    very strange ‘rock’ or ruin?

Two other images of interest are:

    collections/panoramas/Spirit/Bonneville
    see Long: 88.00.59 Lat 11.39.26
nice ‘face’ on strange looking rock.

    Collection/panoramas/Opportunity/Beagle Crater
    see Long: 162.38.36 Lat 02.44.39
Large ball in the distance, unusual shape for Mars.

Note: there seems to be a delay before full resolution is achieved when viewing the image collection. Just pause and wait a short while

    Regards

    Nostra

You can now determine where your loved ones are at any time of day. Or more properly where their cell phone is.

So you don’t want the service you say. You must have something to hide from your family, or your boss, or from…
