Obama’s Global Consciousness

No, the title doesn’t refer to Barack Obama’s inner thoughts about the rest of the world, it’s about the latest data from the Global Consciousness Project (GCP): U.S. election night. We’ve mentioned the Global Consciousness Project before on TDG, but for those who don’t know about it, here’s a quick summary from the horse’s mouth:

We have been collecting data from a global network of random event generators since August, 1998. The network has grown to about 65 host sites around the world running custom software that reads the output of physical random number generators and records a 200-bit trial sum once every second, continuously over months and years… Our purpose is to examine subtle correlations that reflect the presence and activity of consciousness in the world. We have learned that when millions of us share intentions and emotions the GCP/EGG network shows correlations. We can interpret this as evidence for a growing global consciousness.

The GCP summary points out that while there does seem to be an effect, “given the powerful emotions aroused by Barack Obama’s success, and the feeling of wonder and joy generated in huge numbers of people around the world, we might expect a correspondingly powerful effect in the GCP data.” But instead while the data is positive, “it isn’t ‘off the charts’ and we are tempted to believe it should be”. Likely to be an aspect seized on by critics…

Nevertheless, the summary does then go on to discuss some of the other factors involved, such as the signal to noise ratio and also the various ways of analysing the data. Interesting in any case. Thanks Richard.

  1. The Art of Relative Metrics

“…remembering that we cannot reliably interpret single events like this, nevertheless it appears that the election shows at least as strong an effect as the terror attacks”

but what I notice they don’t say is how it compares to when I burned my thumb yesterday (goddam stupid cheap walmart oven mitts!!) or as the net-world tuned in on Blossom Goodchild Day or when Gmail last went down or when the noosphere itself was last honoured … or when the last issue of Sub Rosa was released.

  2. Bias in Analysis
“… tempted to believe it should be”

I think they are confusing their expectations with the potential results in a very young field. Let us remember an important fact: Obama is an untested individual with a short track record. Many people may be hopeful but they don’t really know what to expect yet. In this scenario, the apprehension in the back of their minds is bound to temper the results. Additionally, there is the issue of effect. For a lot of the world population there are far more proximate concerns than the U.S. President. It would be interesting if you could break out data regionally, in Iraq for example, where Obama has much more concrete proposals.

    1. Agreed
While I’m certainly happy Obama won, I’m also filed with anxiety, because I’m worried he could end up being as big a disappointment as President Fox here in Mexico, or Boris Yeltsin in Russia.

Also, by now people have such high hopes, that if by his first 100 days they don’t see their driveways paved with gold, they will call his presidency a complete failure. Kind of like Star Wars Ep. I.

And even though many people all over the world cheered up in celebration of his victory, that wasn’t by far the ONLY news on that particular day. There was also this, happening south of the border. So maybe it was us Mexicans’ fault, that sent a lot of bad vybes to the ether 😉
