Donation Drive – and Prizes!

A quick update on our ‘Voluntary Subscription’ drive here on TDG. A month in, we have had 145 donations made – thanks so much to all that have offered some support, it makes such a huge difference to my ability to push the site forward.

However – and I don’t mean to sound ungrateful, or demanding – 145 people (in a month) is *less than 1%* of our daily audience. I would like to think that the hours and expense that gets poured into TDG over the course of a year is perhaps worth, say, the price of a coffee? If it’s not a valuable resource for 99% of readers, what is the point of the site continuing?

So come on, skip that coffee tomorrow and instead help ensure the future of The Daily Grail. Even if you do think the site’s a worthless pile of crap, you still might get lucky and win a very nifty prize (details below)! Here’s the PayPal donation button, you know you want to click it (you don’t need a PayPal account, you can use your credit card as well):

(edit 11th May 2011: the button has now been removed due to a change in PayPal account)

Now: the upside of having just 145 donations so far is that – at the moment – the chances of those ‘voluntary subscribers’ winning a prize is about 1 in 15 (and getting better as more prize commitments come in). There are signed books from the likes of Jacques Vallee and Graham Hancock on offer, as well as a *very* nice piece of signed occult memorabilia from the Tool camp (thanks Blair!). More besides, but I’ll keep that for the next update – let’s see if we can get up to 200 voluntary subscribers by then! Remember too, the more you donate, the more entries you get in the draw.

Once again, a huge thanks to all those who have contributed to the our funding drive. You’re all stars.

I’m actually surprised. only 145? I’d give you 5 bucks but it costs you 10 to cash. I don’t have paypal nor do i want to get it just to donate. No offense but I don’t trust paypal.

There has to be a better way. If I could buy something off your site with a credit card I would.

I think you’d have better success if you let people buy something with credit than by check or paypal. Lots of people don’t trust paypal.

Maybe ask friends in the UK and America to setup Ebay shops to auction things off.

Just throwing around ideas.

Well good luck! Sorry i’m not able to donate!

Hi Pragmatous,

The PayPal donation page allows you to make a donation directly via credit card, rather than using a PayPal account. I understand that still goes under the “don’t trust paypal” statement, but (a) I’d trust PayPal’s credit card security measures as much as anyone on the ‘net, including myself – it’s their business after all, and (b) All the personal information that people might think PayPal could mine and use/abuse from your credit card details has already been done by your credit card holder, trust me. That is, in fact, one of the their main values to banks.

Kind regards,
Greg

1. Pay Pal
Sorry Greg, I went against better judgement and tried the credit card route on PayPal. It won’t let me because it expects a house number and I don’t have one (inherited one of them fancy house names instead). How hard is it to give you money!!! Can I just send you a GBP cheque?

Phil

2. Me too – Pay Pal not my way
Sorry Greg, lots of people don’t trust Pay Pal any more – myself included.

Even credit cards are suspect – I limit my online credit card purchases to what I know for sure is secure.

Instead of a offering a prize can you just sell the books via credit card? Or get a ebay store… maybe?

Other than that next time I’m in QLD…

Cheers

3. Donation
I really want to donate but I agree with the previous comment. I’ve used paypal once and it was a total disaster so won’t be doing that again.

Can we send non Aussie $ cheques? I think you mentioned earlier about bank transfers – do you want to send me the details over mail?

You have to promise to lose the Ashes next year though….

Hi Phil,

You can send non Aussie cheques, that’s fine. The only issue, as I’ve mentioned, is that cheques in international currency take around 15 minutes to bank (each), and cost around $10 in bank fees. So it’s only a worthwhile option for a significant donation (e.g. $50 and up).

I also have bank transfer details, if you would like them. Again though, I’d imagine you are looking at a significant fee for that internationally ($10 to $20).
You have to promise to lose the Ashes next year though….
Well, it’s a two-way street. You have to promise that your team won’t suck.
😉

Kind regards,
Greg

4. Donation made
After experiencing something of a mini cash crisis (the missus has just come off 8 months maternity leave), we are finally more solvent.

I’ve made my donation. WELL WELL worth it, given the amount of time, effort and personal sacrifice that Greg and all the other TDG moderators put into this site.

To all the others who don’t wish to pay by PayPal – I can understand your lack of trust. So, just send Greg a very large cheque instead – you know, the old fashioned way.

Put yourselves in his shoes – if you were putting in 26 hour days to keep this site running, and trying to maintain a semblance of family life going too, I think you’d appreciate that donation.

Come on people – dig deep!

Thanks X. Although, please, if anybody is in a cash crisis or doing it tough, I do not want you to stretch things by donating money! My life is full of happiness, I don’t want for anything (apart from maybe some spare time!). All I’m asking is that if people have gained value from the site, then I welcome a contribution so that I can pour it back into the site, in order to keep improving it for y’all.

Kind regards,
Greg

Hey everyone,

start sending Greg some spare time. 3 or 4 hours – but hey, what ever you can afford.

5. Donations.
Greg,

I don’t use paypal or even credit cards any more! This is the one area that I have gone backwards tech-net-wise,because of ID theft.I’m safer happier and wealthier for it.

If there was a way for me to donate a little something I would. Why cannot we buy things over the net using a card system, a bit like the way we buy a refill for a Mobil-phone? After its used up,buy another when needed, and if its hacked not much is lost. That would be the best and safest method for all.

Or perhaps big brother wants to know all, and this might make us a little too independently free. Ali Baba might start buying Atomic gadgets from Daily Grail and big brother would not allow that.

Perhaps one of those E-gold systems are a possible way if a good one is known of.

I have Daily Grail as my homepage! If that is to much of a server draw on your resources, perhaps I should change it, and only visit when on my way over? Regards

1. Keep the homepage

Hi Baron,

No need to do that, the server is all paid for and has plenty of bandwidth.

If Paypal and credit card are not to your liking, then there is little that I can do. Perhaps suggest you pass on whatever you would donate to TDG to a worthwhile local charity instead (eg. disable children)…that would make me just as happy.

Kind regards,
Greg

6. Donation
I’ve finally made my donation… Sorry for the lateness but I was in a bit of a squeeze last month. I’m still pretty new here but I can appreciate that the amount of work to keep it all going must be pretty intense – I’m glad to be able to help out a little. Keep up the good work, Greg!

1. No apology needed
No apology needed Zevo, and many thanks for giving something back to TDG!

This site is one of the hidden gems on the Internet. I’m glad and proud to be able to finally contribute. So, to all the other regular visitors: if you’re able to spend $10 a month on big boob sites, surely you can afford to give something to the Daily Grail!

1. Heh….
Now now, I’m sure that’s not very inclusive of the *all* the demographics that visit this place! I bet there’s plenty of folks who go for big willy sites too, as well as big boob sites – heck, probably even those that go for big udder sites…ok, too far… but yes. Heh.

Oh, and for all you poor souls stuck in Azeroth – bugger your Warcraft subscription and spend your cash on a real quest…a grail…quest…

Hohum.

Thanks Keimpe. But seriously, people pay for smut? I’m in the wrong business…let’s see how ‘liberal’ our admins really are, we could be diversifying very soon! I do believe we have our very own ‘Latino’ section…

9. Made anouther donation today.
Wish it could be more. 10$ a month, heck I spend at lest that much on books. Many of which I first heard of on this FANTASTIC site! Hope it helps you out Greg.

10. Well,
I got my donation

Well,

I got my donation in. It’s not as much as I would like to send, but being self-employed, I also have to wait for others to pay me.. 🙂

Ah well. As for the paranoia about PayPal, I jusy don’t see it. I have used PayPal for quite a while ( as in hundreds of transactions, literally) and use it with my business, and I have never had any problems with it.

Paypal is fine guys. I’ve used it for years countless times. I’ve even had to get my money back from a deadbeat, and it they returned every penny to me no problems.

another $10 from me. hope it helps.

Did a memorabilia store idea ever get anywhere? That might be a way to subsidize the donation part.

12. New bank accounts
Hi Greg,

Couldn’t you open/create a bankaccount in the USA and UK ? Using an international bank, it would be easier and certainly cheaper to transfer money to an Australian branch, or f.i. buy your new car in the US and have it shipped. Pay the TDG hosting costs etc..

13. I Made a Donation but
I made a small donation but certainly hope those rumors regarding Rupert M.’s interest in acquiring TDG are false or, if true, that Greg & company will manage to fend him off. Rupert has more than enough $$$ already.

Bill I.

1. Rupes
I was hoping the rumors of Steven S. amalgamating TDG with his social network site Ghost Town were true. 😉

I’m sure Greg’s sitting in his office, screaming “SHOW ME THE MONEY!”

14. donation
I am a member of the “mainstream” media who very much enjoys Daily Grail. In fact, we use it as a resource for stories. Give me a month or so to get my finances in order and I’ll be happy to donate. (Is it tax-deductible? ;D)

15. Donation
Just dropped a little something into your PayPal. Sorry it’s not more!

I see you’re just outside Brisbane. There’s a bunch of us have Fortean meets every month or so in the city — you’d be welcome to come along if you’re interested in chewing over the latest. Drop me a line (below) if you’re interested in coming.
