Magic Mushrooms and Psi: On TV in the 60s!

And we thought they were such prudes: UFO Mystic’s Greg Bishop points out a great find, a 1961 television show which investigated psi effects while under the influence of psilocybin (‘magic’) mushrooms:

From January of 1959 to July of 1961, John Newland directed and hosted a unique television program entitled ‘One Step Beyond’. Newland and his creative crew combed the literature and produced 96 episodes of excellent programming based on real stories of psychic and paranormal phenomena. When the Twilight Zone series was about to go into production, Rod Serling actually met with Newland and assured him that his new program was not going to step on his toes or rip off One Step Beyond.

Newland dramatized actual (or reported actual) events, such as premonitions and other psychic episodes surrounding the Titanic disaster, or Abraham Lincoln’s presentiment of his own assassination. The most interesting show of the entire series has to be “The Sacred Mushroom,” which aired on January 4, 1961. Accompanied by three research scientists, and leaving the cloistered atmosphere of Hollywood sound stages, Newland traveled to a small village in the mountains of central Mexico to investigate the mysterious mushrooms.

If that wasn’t enough, the show also investigated the effects of magic mushrooms on psychic abilities, with enigmatic/shadowy psi scientist Andrija Puharich tagging along. (Puharich had authored a book on the topic even at this early stage – 1959 – titled The Sacred Mushroom: Key to the Door of Eternity. See Filip Coppens’ article The Stargate Conundrum for a good rundown of the strange goings-on).

The entire show is available to be watched on YouTube, in three parts: One, Two and Three.

  1. One Step Beyond
Great item. For those of us who were coming of age in the 60s, Newland’s “One Step Beyond” was our first major introduction to paranormal and Fortean phenomena–an amazing show for it’s time. It made for an interesting, non-fiction complement to “The Twilight Zone” (my two favorite shows of the period)–the latter being more in the style of philosophical morality-tales. (But is it possible OSB was on for only that short a time? Because I remember it like it was yesterday, as though it was on for years..) I hope that more people can become aware of Newland’s work–he’s been overlooked for far too long.

    1. Not funny
Again trying to derail a topic RPJ ? Im getting the impression your presence at TDG serves another purpose/master. You’ll be getting paid with madness once you’ll reach the beyond and you will.

      1. Too late!
Isn’t it plain clear that I’m already mad?? 😉

Er dude, chill. RPJ *finds* topics, he doesn’t derail them. That’s why he’s an admin.

        Kind regards,
        Greg

Well Greg, thats an understandable response, but there’s no logic in it. I havent done any analysis of the kind of topics RPJ offers but i have noted his ridicule in comments. Now i may be mistaken but TDG aint a having a laugh/slapstick site. The fact that he’s an admin now justifies my impression, he’s not who he pretends to be, at least as much as you arguing that he’s ok because he *finds* topics…thats btw the kind of control that the general public suffer when getting their news from big media..

          Kind Regards

          1. Sorry bato
Yes, I like to take things on a light side, because humor is a really good tool to cope with the very serious subjects—like death, for instance, that’s why we invented the Día de Muertos down here.

Allow me to re-use the quote I gave to last week’s News Briefs:

” One must not judge the utility of a work by the style the author has chosen: often puerile things are said gravely, while very serious truths are said with bantering wit.”

Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu

            Shameless justification? You betcha! 😉

I guess our humour mustn’t be up to scratch then…TDG is definitely about not taking ourselves seriously, and having a laugh. RPJ has just the right mix for mine – serious interest in these fascinating topics, but having fun with it (and himself) at the same time.

You are welcome to disagree. But on this site, RPJ is free to comment and post as he sees fit.

            Kind regards,
            Greg

          3. The joke is on us ?
Hello Greg, there’s nothin wrong with taking oneself not too seriously, i agree and it’s likely a healthy attitude. However, indirectly ridiculing others is a different matter. It’s not as if RPJ hides it, his nick alone points to a clear case of negative neurolinguistic programming as he connects taking the red pill (a positive) with a strong negative ..junkie. In that sense it was not surprising that when Carol Noble posted her blogentry “Words – Do we honestly understand what is being said?” he jumped on it by immediately diffusing her subject. Willfully, as he later denounced my remark he hadnt understood what it was about.

Greg, you of all people know how much and what kind of attention your site has attracted this past decade. Your visitor numbers may not be that alarming, but some of the subjectmatter that is being seriously discussed here, is alarming to the powers that be. They haven’t been keeping the people ignorant without purpose all these ages, controlling immortals is much more difficult then controlling ‘cattle’. As such i’m sure TDG is on their radar. Having an agent inside a logical first step of exerting control, you may even have had buying out offers already. Nobody here expects you to have done background checks on your editors, all help is welcome , but dont be naive Greg, even local peace movements get infiltrated these days.

            Kind Regard

          4. RPJ, double agent on the service of… Speedy Gonzalez?
However, indirectly ridiculing others is a different matter.
Would you kindly refer me to the posts where I have indirectly ridiculed other members of TDG, Fisrtborn? But please, bear in mind there’s a difference (IMHO) between good-natured teasing with some members, and offensive scorn.
It’s not as if RPJ hides it, his nick alone points to a clear case of negative neurolinguistic programming as he connects taking the red pill (a positive) with a strong negative ..junkie.
Gee… you’ve probably read more into my nickname than I ever did. I first used “Red Pill Junkie” in another blog that has nothing to do with TDG, and honestly I can’t remember why I chose it, aside from the fact that I’m a big Matrix fan, and somehow “RPJ” conveyed a meaning of my deep interest with these subjects—UFOs, Cryptozoology et al— in an almost self-deprecating way; you know, trying to be aware of the dangers of obsession an all that.
In that sense it was not surprising that when Carol Noble posted her blogentry “Words – Do we honestly understand what is being said?” he jumped on it by immediately diffusing her subject. Willfully, as he later denounced my remark he hadnt understood what it was about.
I did not immediately diffuse the subject, but it did get a bit side-tracked because I responded to the comments of Kathrinn & Earthling, whom I consider to be people who enjoy my comments (as I do theirs). I do not think that’s such a crime, because the purpose of this site is to generate discussion, and sometimes from one topic you jump to another one that could be equally interesting; that’s what humans do. Besides, when you deal with trivial mundane things you get to know people a bit more, it’s almost as if having a face-to-face discussion, and I believe that during all these months (more than a year now! my where does time go?) I’ve come to know something of the lives of many members of TDG, and of that I’m deeply grateful.

What can I say, FirstBorn? I’m feeling kind of… flattered that you consider me so important and take me so seriously.

If it made you feel any better, aside from my real name—which BTW, is disclosed for all members to see if you check my profile, something you yourself haven’t done— I would gladly provide Greg with my home address and a photo of my face—although I might retouch it a bit, since I wouldn’t want Greg to suffer a stroke or anything 😉

            Saludos
