The Master of Mysteries

A new book tells the story of one of the 20th century’s greatest names in esoterica, Manly P. Hall. Written by L.A. Times journalist Louis Sahagun, Master of Mysteries: The Life of Manly Palmer Hall (Amazon US and UK) “provides a panorama of twentieth century mysticism and an insider’s view into a subculture that continues to have a profound influence on movies, television, music, books, art, and thought.”

In 1919, a Canadian teenager with a sixth-grade education arrived by train to the wilds of Los Angeles. Within a decade he had transformed himself into a world-renowned luminary and occult scholar. His name was Manly Palmer Hall, author of the landmark encyclopedia ‘The Secret Teachings of All Ages’ and the 20th century’s most prolific writer and speaker on ancient philosophies, mysticism, and magic.

Hall revealed to thousands how universal wisdom could be found in the myths and symbols of the ancient Western mystery teachings. He amassed the largest occult library west of the Mississippi and founded The Philosophical Research Society in 1934 for the purpose of providing seekers rare access to the world’s wisdom literature. He became a confidante and friend to celebrities and politicians. In 1990, he died—some say he was killed—in what remains an open-ended Hollywood murder mystery.

  1. Manly Hall
I saw Hall give one of his last public lectures (possibly his last) in early 1990, on the occasion of his final birthday. It was titled “The Garment of Light,” and though he was very old and physically feeble at the time(he could barely make it up to the stage), he lectured from memory, used no notes, and his mind was as clear as a bell. But I was also struck by the sense of extraordinary gentility/sensitivity he exuded–quite a contrast to the almost otherworldly seriousness I gathered from some of his photographs.

He was one of a kind.

  2. He sounds really
    amazing..

    unlike the R dude

anyway.. I shall look into this person

    the book sounds very interesting

and lucky you got to see him speak!

how many other treasures in human form do we pass by without realizing it?

  3. Great mind
Manly P. Hall was a great mind. I have read Mystery teachings of the ages, Lectures on Ancient Philosophy and America’s Secret Destiny. I was pleased with all three. They are must reads for those who wish to know the real motives of Freemasonry.

  4. A quick guess
    Hi Greg –

Arrived in LA in 1919, publishes first esoteric book in 1922.
Less than 3 years to acquire such knowledge, and to write it up and get it published.

My guess is that Hall studied with George Starr White or one of his associates, and/or with one of Lillian V. Bense’s associates, and/or with a Rosicrucian associate, and/or a theosophist.

In any case, Hall’s beliefs and knowledge most likely go back to Augustus and Alice Le Plongeon.

The strange part in all of this is reading the rationality evidenced in his UFO lecture.

You’ve got Hall’s bio in front of you, what is the answer?
And was he killed, and if so by who?

    1. Not to my knowledge

As far as I am aware, Hall died of natural causes.I could be wrong.

        1. To answer your question
I believe he got funding from the Rosicrucian Fellowship and the family of his first wife, who were oil tycoons (if wrong please correct me). He moved to California to find his mother after being separated as a child and originally studied with the Rosicrucian fellowship. After realizing that some of their info was somewhat misleading, however, he traveled the world to find out the truth behind the mysteries. Mostly getting info from forgotten library books and in antique shops.

    2. From Occult America…
You’ve got Hall’s bio in front of you, what is the answer? And was he killed, and if so by who?
From Mitch Horowitz’s Occult America: The Secret History of How Mysticism Shaped Our Nation (Amazon US and UK):
It was a death that Hall’s widow, Marie, stoked intense concerns over, telling the Los Angeles Times in 1994: “I firmly believe it was murder.”

She wasn’t the only one. Investigators is the Los Angeles police department found the circumstances suspicious: Hall was alone with [Daniel] Fritz and Fritz’s son when he died; hours passed before the death was reported; the body appeared to have been moved from the outdoors to inside; and there was the strange timing of the new will [Hall signed his estate over to Fritz 6 days before his death]…

…Aged, obese, and suffering from a strained heart, Manly P. Hall was probably not the victim of foul play, as friends feared, but his final days were still puzzling.
