The Taboo of Psi

Transhumanist pundit George Dvorsky has noted on his Sentient Developments blog an illustrative case of the ‘taboo of psi’:

Much to the chagrin of his readers, AI theorist Ben Goertzel has dared to explore the topic of parapsychology on his blog (or just ‘psi’). He argued that the scientific evidence for psi is stronger than we think.

When his readers complained in the comments section, Goertzel came back by saying…

I’ve omitted Goertzel’s comments, which you can read on his own blog. What is worth pointing out is the way that Dvorsky has to frame the story. A post about psi research is “much to the chagrin” of Goertzel’s readers. He “dared to explore” the topic. I mean, really, are we living through the Inquisition again, when scientists have to “dare” to explore a topic?

Whether there is something to psi, or whether it’s just an artifact of the experiments we haven’t worked out yet, there is one certain thing. Scientists *should* be investigating it. There are decades of positive, replicated ganzfeld results suggestive of telepathy (among various other experiments into topics such as presentiment and remote viewing). It makes an absolute joke of modern science that someone needs to “dare” to look further into it, and all those who vent their anger at such a person have no right to categorize themselves as a scientifically-minded person. Simple as that.

  1. Black box
There’s a small black box in Edinburgh that has accurately predicted future events, and the scientists involved have no idea how it does it — but they’re honest enough to admit that it does work, and they’re genuinely excited about it. I’d hate to think what the nuffnuffs ranting and raving on Ben Goertzel’s blog would do to the machine. Probably smash it with a hammer and fling pooh.

    1. Prediction
I can confidently predict that if he was in the room with the box, and he had a hammer, it would be so 🙂

    2. From the article Rick MG linked . . .
“Obviously sceptics would love to demolish Bierman’s work but have so far failed to do so. Nor is his research a one off that can be casually dismissed. To make matters even more intriguing, Bierman says that other mainstream labs have produced similar results but they are too frightened to go public.”

I recall reading somewhere that Copernicus waited to publish his work on a heliocentric universe until he was on his deathbed, due to his concern as to how it would be received both by his contemporaries in science as well as the church.

“Skeptics” should not be allowed to define themselves as such. They are nothing more than today’s equivalent of yesterday’s bishops refusing to look through Galileo’s telescope. Their shared objective is not inquiry into truth, but maintenance of a particularly rigid worldview.

Genuine progress won’t come from a new worldview, it will only come from a broad understanding of how much any worldview limits genuine discovery. As I posted at Prescott’s blog: We’re all crazy, and don’t know it. Might as well be amused until we wake up.

      1. conflict of interests
I recall reading somewhere that Copernicus waited to publish his work on a heliocentric universe until he was on his deathbed
There was a conflict of interest, considering that he was hired by the Church. I suppose it’s not so different from current behaviors of employers who fire people for writing compromising stuff on their blogs 🙂

But I agree with you, some skeptics’ position give away a very rigid mindframe. We need fluidity, like Einstein.

That’s why I would rather have a guy like Michio Kaku invited for a dinner party, than Richard Dawkins 🙂

        1. Real scientists
The reality is you can count the real scientists on the fingers of your hands. These are the guys who really shifted the pardigm. The others are those who try to uphold the existing paradigm. Yet, if you think about it, once a paradigm is accepted, it is yesterday’s news.
As for the paradigm shifting, this can only be done – and only ever has been done – from outside; from a crackpot heretic.
I don’t think I would like a knowledge system that wasn’t a paradigm. Where would be the debate if everyone was in agreement? I don’t class that as moderation – rather, it is totalitarianism.
Best, I think, to have vibrant debate, because it thrashes out the issues, and, through compromise, eventually leads to moderation. If, of course, we realise that contrary views are not ‘heresies’, but opinions that should be tolerated. THAT is where moderation begins.

          1. Um … dare I even mention …
Ok, this is a little off topic, perhaps, but can someone explain to me why psi research is presto-digitalical hokus-pocus shell-game snake oil vending, yet SETI is state-funded “science”? I mean, hey, trying to detect an Italian Restaurant in Poughkeepsie by sifting the wavelets washing ashore in Lagos, can that really ever produce statistical significance beyond ‘tantalizing deviations‘? I’m just curious.
“About psi and physics … I am skeptical of attempts to explain psi based on quantum theory, due to not understanding how decoherence would be avoided in the hypothesized long-range quantum nonlocal binding between brains and other systems; but I recognize that quantum theory as such does not actually rule out psi.”
Mmmm… Mr. Sean Carroll would disagree (check today’s quote of the day and also the article about how quantum theory ‘rules out’ telekinesis and other psy phenomena)… which some of you would have done by now, if you weren’r too busy FIGHTING OVER EMOTICONS! 🙁
