I sure could use a Vulcan mind meld right about now.

Quote of the Day:

On a personal level, Freaking Out is a process whereby an individual casts off outmoded and restricting standards of thinking, dress, and social etiquette in order to express CREATIVELY his relationship to his immediate environment and the social structure as a whole.

  1. Ahuizotl
Isn’t funny that the name “Ahuizotl” means “water monster” in nahuatl, and that the tomb of this aztec emperor is being found now that Mexico city is suffering terrible floods on account of global warming??

I stopped believing in coincidences a loooong time ago…

PS: Hey Austria, give us back Moctezuma’s Headdress!!

  2. more global warming
As I am, to some extent, a global warming “doubter”, I’d just like to respond to the “Truth About Denial” article.

First, I’m not part of the big denial conspiracy. I just form opinions on the information available to me. Of course my conclusions are not always correct. But I don’t like being called bad names by politicians. It smacks of persecutions we have seen on many occasions.

Second, more significantly, I have looked for the report mentioned in that article, and for the data the large group of scientists used as input to their computer model.

The report is not available yet. All that is available is a summary for policy makers. I reported the links in an earlier discussion. They are all on United Nations websites. The full report comes out in book form (not in a peer-reviewed journal) in November or so.

Consequently, I don’t anyone except the researchers preparing it has actually read it. Not Barbara Boxer, not Al Gore. Probably not anyone on their staff. I very much doubt that anyone in the newspapers, TV stations, or in any media has read this full report. Not that many of them would understand much of it.

Third, I called a few people at the UN, to look for the input data. The people who supposedly maintain these things say they don’t have the data. They say only the report authors have them.

So the big general consensus is not based on the actual science. It is based on policial conclusions, based on a summary containing recommendations, presented by the report authors.

Given that the general public doesn’t have access to the actual science, I reserve the right to have some doubt.

    1. Delial
      Good morning everyone,
I don’t intend to get into another global warming debate, Earthling. All I’ll say is it is commonsense, rather than pure science, that leads me to my acceptance of a man-made effect.
But regardless of this, I, too, hate the language of politicians today, using emotive words such as ‘deniar’ if you disagree with consensus, or ‘racist’ if you dare question political correctness.
Are political stances so fragile today that only insult will silence dissent?

      I’m fanatical about moderation

      1. simple tactics
Political stances and heavy-handed debate – I think the explanation is simple. The political debate is almost never about the substance.

Instead, the tactical advisors say to scare and/or discredit the opponent, and mobilize the voters on your side. This saves a lot of time and thinking. It’s basically just sales. If you ask a good salesman, or marketing person, the marketing tactics have little or nothing to do with the product.
