SETI Scientist: We’ll Find E.T By 2036

Plenty of people, myself included, have expressed skepticism about SETI (not so much the goal and vision of the project, but the strategies being used). But that doesn’t stop SETI’s Seth Shostak from being supremely optimistic about the search for alien civilisations – and I’m happy to let him tell you all about it. Here he is at a TEDx event earlier in the year putting forward his view that we’ll find ET life in the next quarter of a century:

SETI researcher Seth Shostak bets that we will find extraterrestrial life in the next twenty-four years, or he’ll buy you a cup of coffee. At TEDxSanJoseCA, he explains why new technologies and the laws of probability make the breakthrough so likely — and forecasts how the discovery of civilizations far more advanced than ours might affect us here on Earth.

The upside of not finding E.T. by 2036? Seth will buy you a cup of coffee. Also: aliens not gestating their babies in our chests, stealing our water.

  1. My cuppa
Like I wrote when I mentioned this video on the news briefs, Sethie is gonna have to buy me some expensive Kupa Luwak cat $#it coffee to repay my frustration for their lack of flexibility!

  2. Adjusted for inflation that’s like $1m
With due respect to Shostak, he is mistaken. Barring a quantum leap in communications technology like sub-space, the law of inverse squares precludes an actual signal from traveling the distances required for detection.

long before then we’ll be off the Earth and have sent many many many unhumanned probes pretty much everywhere, searching, sniffing, scanning…

there’ll even be DIY kits so that ordinary Janes can launch :3

This sounds like the approach most other civilizations have already taken, and will continue to take, as well as our own once we attain such capabilities.

  3. Disclosure
Will repost a comment I just made via YouTube, as I believe the readers of this site may find it interesting:

“Had heard from an insider in the Pentagon that disclosure would occur around 2036.. Interesting coincidence. I suspect SETI has found such signals, but has yet to disclose those either. Full disclosure is going to occur gradually, in stages, beginning with what we now see in the discovery of habitable planets, eventually disclosing the discovery of ET microbial life on Mars, followed by a signal from SETI, and eventually formal (public) contact with an intelligent ET civilization.”

    However, I will add this:

I believe the fundamental approach SETI takes is flawed. I suspect Optical SETI would be more apt to attain results, as laser technology will likely find use beyond that of radio for any given intelligent civilization.
