News Briefs 17-03-2006

I’ve been lookin’ all day, but I’m telling you up front, what with Greg posting 7 updates, and me contributing to his 3 News Briefs this week, there’s no news left – nothin’, nada, zip! In desperation, I’ve finally just made up a bunch of headlines, and inserted random links. So there’s no telling where you’ll end up, but I’m reasonably sure you’ll have a pleasant trip. And congrats to TDG reader, Xaltotun, for having the 2nd highest score in ThothWeb’s recent alternative quiz.

Quote of the Day:

O Paddy dear, an’ did ye hear the news that’s goin’ round?
The shamrock is by law forbid to grow on Irish ground!
No more Saint Patrick’s Day we’ll keep, his colour can’t be seen,
For there’s a cruel law agin the wearin’ o’ the Green!

      Hi Rick,

Did you catch Bono on Enough Rope with Andrew Denton?

      Peace and Respect

        Hi Greg,

Yep, it was a great interview. I was paranoid U2 would be hijacked by Rove, which is a fate worse than death.

What Bono said about Bush was very interesting — instead of marching in the streets and shouting, “f*** you BushCo!”, Bono just sucked it in and talked to the man. I admire that.

Idealistic, but very practical in a way — if you want money from the world’s richest nation to help ease extreme poverty in third world countries, then you’ll have to speak to the President. Bono did that, and got some checks signed (even if they haven’t all been cashed yet). Still, a few years ago America wasn’t giving any free HIV drugs to Africa — last year, 400’000 Africans have received free retroviral treatment, and will continue to receive it indefinitely without question from the US … and we have people like Bono to thank for that, because of instead of screaming “f*** you” to BushCo, he told them about the problem and asked for a bit of help. Brave man. Ok, so that’s not a lot when you consider how big the AIDS epidemic is in Africa … but it’s a start. A positive start.

It could easily have blown up in his face, but through sheer talk-power (and Bono can talk you to death, literally) he got a few crumbs from the pie he wanted. Not much, but he was gracious for it. Bob Geldof would have screamed, “is that f***ing all you’re giving?! you’ve got a whole pie and you’re only giving me a few crumbs?! f*** you!”, but Bono thanked them for the pithy amount and accepted it — which is good psychology, makes the politicians feel happy with themselves, and makes it easier to get more money out of them at later dates!

Bono’s a real salesman — I loved how he didn’t answer Denton’s last question, and turned it around to talk about the One campaign and poverty. Sharp man, interviewed by another sharp man in Denton. Good stuff. I recommend everyone read the transcript.

Anyways, everyone’s probably getting tired of my gushing praise. Well, I’ve had a few pints of guinness tonight!

Am I buggin’ ya? I didn’t mean to bug ya. Edge, play the blues …

        Rico (part Rick, part Bono)
