Skeptical Inquirer 29:2

The March/April issue of Skeptical Inquirer has been released, and as usual the SI website has a number of the articles available for free:

  • This issue’s cover story tackles the question of why evolution still isn’t accepted by a large portion of the population.
  • David Morrison tells us we should be skeptical of the media coverage of asteroid impact research and predictions.
  • Was Jack the Ripper just a quack doctor?
  • Bruce Flamm updates readers on the latest developments in the controversial Columbia Univerisity power of prayer study.

See the SI website for complete details of the latest issue.

  1. no more asteroids?
He means to rob us of the regularly scheduled doomsday? Next thing you know, they will want us to save something for retirement, claiming that the world won’t end.

    1. they might even have to save the earth
It’s a bit of a worry if there is no end of the world in sight.People might have to actually take more care of the global warming situation instead of letting it get worse.
      But then God will provide.

      1. God will provide?
This kind of do-nothing attitude could get us all killed.

Better to say “God helps those who help themselves”.

We’ve got to change our energy supplies to renewable sources.

        1. Yes God will provide
This is the reason the fundies give for using all the earth’s resources and buggering it up in the process.
The Rapture is coming and God will have made sure we have enough until then.
          After then who cares.
All the Holy Joes will have gone with God and aren’t worried about what the rest of us have to put up with.
And the problem is that it is the Holy Joes who have all the say.

        2. We should be prepared
We should work to be prepared for significant threats if it is within our capabilities, which includes working to reduce our effect on adverse climate change, dealing with it if it happens anyway, and it includes being able to do something about asteroids. Renewble energies are necessary as well, but the renewable criterion itself doesn’t really have anything to do with climate.

Aside from making fun of the continuous “end of the world” reporting in the media (and they deserve to be made fun of), I always favour expanding our choice of methods. We can only win if we do that, being locked in to a single way of doing things means sooner or later you run into problems.
