The latest newsletter from James ‘The Amazing’ Randi contains an urgent call to his readers, for action against the Smithsonian Institute due to their screening of a documentary created by the Discovery Institute – a well-known supporter of “Intelligent Design”. It raises an interesting question: is Randi’s call symptomatic of a fascist side to orthodox science, or should we fight to ensure that our institutions are not abused by organisations with agendas? The financial basis for the decision is certainly discomforting, but on the other hand the documentary – titled “The Privileged Planet” – is no hack attempt, with contributions from individuals with impressive academic credentials.
