Destroyed on the lathe of heaven…

Quote of the Day:

“Confucius and you are both dreams, and I who say you are dreams am a dream myself. This is a paradox. Tomorrow a wise man may explain it; that tomorrow will not be for 10,000 generations. ”

  1. Dead penguins & sardines
Might have been the result of an underwater volcanic eruption.

There was an earthquake in Peru recently. There’s also this other eruption near the Galapagos.

They don’t call it the Ring of Fire for nothing.

And of course, there was the tragic earthquake in Italy.

PS: Also, an earthquake in Hawaii

  2. Turning CO2 into rock
Could turning CO2 into solid rock be a fix for climate change?

The project will take CO2 …and dissolve it in water under high pressures. It will then pump the solution into layers of basalt about 400-700m underground, and watch what happens.

Laboratory experiments suggest the dissolved CO2 will react with calcium in the basalt to form solid calcium carbonate. Sigurdardottir said: “In the lab it takes a few days to a few weeks.

Mother Nature figured out how to change CO2 into rocks billions of years ago. Her method took quite a bit longer, but it had the added advantage of producing the oxygen we’re still breathing today:

Stromatolites are layered accretionary structures [i.e., rocks] formed in shallow water by the trapping, binding and cementation of sedimentary grains by biofilms of microorganisms, especially cyanobacteria (commonly known as blue-green algae).

Cyanobacteria are thought to be largely responsible for increasing the amount of oxygen in the primeval earth’s atmosphere through their continuing photosynthesis.

Cyanobacteria use water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight to create their food. The byproducts of this process are oxygen and calcium carbonate (lime).
