  • A humble example of why those grandiose geo-engineering schemes to fix global Warming should remain on the drawing board… for now.

  • The new enemy of Atheism: the new Atheist movement.

Thanks Kat; & thanks Rick, who is—despite what Lula says—the kindest & nicest blue-eyed person I’ve ever met 😉

Quote of the Day:

“For me, atheism’s roots are in a sober and modest assessment of where reason and evidence lead us. That means the real enemy is not religion as such, but any kind of system of belief that does not respect these limits on our thinking. For that reason, I want to engage with thoughtful, intelligent believers, and isolate extremists. But if we demonise all religion, such coalitions of the reasonable are not possible. Instead, we are likely to see moderate religious believers join ranks with fundamentalists, the enemies of their enemy, to resist what they see as an attempt to wipe out all forms of religious belief.”

  1. 13 Indigenous Grandmothers
LOL, a bit odd to find that link here, but then again, maybe not after all… I’m involved with this group in a round about way; Grandmother Agnes Pilgrim is here in Oregon, who is one of the grandmothers, and there is a group here of “grandmothers” where we have her come and speak to us, etc.

    1. Why I added the link
I was trying to catch up on my meatspace reading—i.e. the reading I do outside the net—when I came across an article about this council of indigenous grandmothers that had visisted Europe for the fist time in 2008. So I thought “Wow! How cool is that we are finally heeding the wisdom of the elderly women”.

In Mexico, as in the rest of Latin America, the grandmother has a very important role in the family hierarchy; something which (IMO) is lacking in other countries, where they see the elder as an embarrassment at best and a burden at worst. So it’s glad to notice we’re finally coming around 🙂

      1. A few years ago, a friend of
A few years ago, a friend of mine and I created a local “Grandmother’s Council” here in Eugene, Oregon — idea being women getting together to discuss and present to the community issues important to us — and hopefully, everyone, with the intent of children — what we, as “granmothers” (even though I am not a grandmother, or a mother, but work with children every day) as a huge part of this. Teaching, helping, children, as well as learning from them.

I pretty much dropped out after the beginning, but my friend really worked very hard and after a couple of years, it really has taken off locally, thanks to her. Grandma Agnes, one of the Indiginous grandmothers, has come to Eugene a couple of times now, and she’s coming here again this month at a major function — blessing of the water. Donations help to fund the IG and their work as well.

The first time I met Agnes Pilgram was a Native American educator’s conference in Oregon; she is an amazing woman!

  2. about that Walesa stuff
I don’t know about brothels in Vatican but there are evidence that Walesa collaborated with the secret police in the 70s. You see in Poland Walesa is one of the sacred cows and nobody is really debating the issue of his relations with communists, they [mainstream media, popular social commentators] are just saying “oh god, how can you say this” and attack personally any researcher who looks at this. So don’t be too quick in dismissing this stuff. Not that it matters anyway. Also Walesa is an ultra-egocentric dork. It kinda saddens me that he and Wojtyla are best known poles around.

    best regards 🙂

    1. Interesting
Do you have any links we can search for more info re. this?

Maybe I’m projecting the remnants of my Catholic upbringing, but when I was at school all my teachers used to revere Walesa and his Union/political movement. No man is perfect of course 🙂

      1. hmm
It’s difficult to find anything in english… Check this interview with Centkiewicz (one of the authors of “The Security Service and Lech Walesa”, heavily attacked in every mainstream media).

recently two more books were published. As for me I think he was an agent in the 70s, some former Solidarity leaders (mostly from right wing spectrum) claim that he still worked for the secret police during the 80s but I doubt it. Still there are many issues here, lustration, policy of thick line, the weird fall of Olszewski government in 92… If you put the pieces together it’s obvious that something is not right here. I guess it’s politics, there is no noble Walesa and there is no revere Solidarity, just murky business as usual.

(all the Walesa quotations are true, some like “I’m for and also against” are popular memes in Poland)

        best regards 🙂

  3. *new* atheism…
“atheism’s roots are in a sober and modest assessment of where reason and evidence lead us. That means the real enemy is not religion as such, but any kind of system of belief that does not respect these limits on our thinking”…geeze, i hope he means limits on ATHEISTIC thinking…i hope he doesn’t mean the limits of HUMAN thinking…does he really even understand what he is saying?? if all we did was think where “reason and evidence” lead us, we’d have no art, no music…no creativity of any kind…no inventions…may even no stone tools! yikes!
