Orb?

Up late the other night in my garden office (engrossed in TDG, of course) I noticed a circular spot of light out of the corner of my eye, near the ceiling. It was just over an inch across. As I watched, it moved up for a second before disappearing.

Once it had gone, my first instinct was to look around for a potential light source, but none was to be found. Then I realised that it would have to have been a very focused beam of light to create such a small spot. I can replicate its size with my LED keyring, by holding it just a couple of inches away from the wall. I was not wearing anything reflective, and had been sitting quite still.

Can't explain it. Spooky. Especially as I was alone at night, down the garden, reading weird stuff!

Cool!

So, it was more like a circle than a bubble or a sphere?

What color was it?

The whole experience lasted what? a second?

It was like, er, an orb - a filled circle of whitish light. It didn't give me the impression of being an illuminated patch of the wall, more like floating just in front of it, then maybe disappearing through it.

I'd say it lasted a couple of seconds in all, moving only after I looked directly up at it!

Perceval

A probe!

An alien probe that was inspecting you while you were inspecting TDG! They're on to us!! ;-)

PS: You could try to summon it one of these days.

No, it was me actually.

No, it was me actually.

Is that supposed to be

Is that supposed to be reassuring!

Perceval

well, not reassuring

You know the whole grand conspiracy is shining little lights in your eyes now. We have the technology :)

More seriously, there can be other reasons. Reflections inside your eye. Or other not-quite random firings of the light receptors. Or something in between those receptors and wherever in the brain we end up "seeing" things. A lot of physical stuff in other words.

Then there are those flashes from cosmic radiation that some astronauts see, and the persistence of images on the retina. Which again is different from the persistence of images in the mind.

How is that for a snow job?

:)

Great

So basically you have 3 choices. Either you are:

a) Crazy;

b) With brain or eye dammage; or

c) Witness of an astounding phenomenon whose origins, capabilities and intentions are totally unknown to man.

How's that for reassuring ;-)

Red Pill Junkie

no no

Of course I was only giving examples. It could be one of those 3 , or if could be something I have not thought about.

You know, I think of many things. I do. But not everything. There is not enough time. Also, my mind is not all-encompassing. If I had all eternity to learn, and if I had that kind of mind -

We will just have to wait, won't we ?

Another possibility is some combination of (1), (2), (3) and more things.

Red perhaps you missed it, seeing flashy things, due to cosmic radiation (such as charged particles) doesn't say they come from anywhere in particular.

Cosmic radiation, ion drives from aliens, ion drives from experimental US or Russian space craft.

It still works as a snow job :)

Yes I think so

I think you're right when you say this Orb mystery is probably a combination of the three, in the sense that Perceval was the witness of something real, that might not have been perceived correctly—or in its entirety— by his eyes, and thus interpreted in an incomplete form as a bubble of light.

The interesting thing here is that these phenomena seems to be connected to vegetation. Marissa shared a photo of hers recently, of an orb she photographed at her backyard orchard. And Perceval saw his orb while inside his garden office.

I have experienced those flashes at night, with my eyes closed. They are disturbing; and I remember that during the Apollo missions, Houston was very upset about the reports of those flashes made by the astronauts, because they meant they were being bombarded by cosmic radiation from which their suits could offer no protection.

Could that radiation produce the psychological steer toward a more mystical view of life many astronauts showed after they returned?

Also

Also there might have been some alien small orbs. But why would the aleins do that?

This is almost unrelated, but maybe not entirely - I read a book by Stanislaw Lem, where a starship goes to find another civilization. I don't remember the title.

The starship has peaceful purposes but also powerful weapons.

In the end they fail in the search of the other intelligence, because these other guys are simply smaller than 1 inch.

I really don't mean to discredit Perceval's observation.

Consider this:

Another reason for Perceval's brief observation, is not some psychic stuff, or the physical eye features, and brain short circuits are all nonsense.

Perhaps the aliens are just really small and really fast?

Lem's book is much more involved than that, I lost my Lem collection. I should get a whole new one. The man was brilliant.

Just looking, perhaps !

Why is everyone trying to explain this poor little orb away as something other than what it might be? Can't there be something which we don't understand that appears as a small ball of light that's just mooching around having a look at things?

Regards, Kathrinn

It's our lot, I guess

Just yesterday I was discussing with Paolo how in the west we are conditioned to rationalize everything, even the things that might be impossible to comprehend. Castañeda wrote about it in his books, how he tried to fulfill the role of educated academic as a way to make sense of the world of sorcerers that Don Juan opened for him; while Don Juan kept insisting that explanations were useless, that the best a man could hope to do was not to explain the world, but to experience it to the fullest.

Maybe our obsession in explaining stems from the unconscious belief that if we understand something, we are in a way controlling it. But even if you understand what a shark is, that doesn't protect you from its jaws biting you in the butt ;-)

Fear...

People are sometimes afraid of what they do not understand.

I personally think mysteries keep life interesting and it is ok not to know all the answers.

You are right, though...a lot of folks are afraid of what they cannot control or understand.

Knowing about sharks is a good thing as long as you don;t give up swimming entirely lol.

afraid

If you folks had actually read my comments, there are some things in there about how this orb-thingy could be related to actual space travelers.

but noooo, you won't see that.

Well, with all these UFO news coming from the UK, Perceval's orb might have been the vanguard of the invasion.

have to go ask Lem's people

For those who have not read any of Sanislaw Lem's work, you should.

But I have to go find the particular book, with the really small aliens.

I will report back when I have found it :)

[later]

Actually the book is titled "Fiasco"
It is worth reading, and also buying.

See perhaps, this plot summary.

I you like science fiction, and you don't know about Lem, well you really have missed a lot.

Rascal Goes for a Ride?

© April 3, 2004 By Marissa A Spencer

The cool evening air seemed like any other evening. The food was left for the cats and all our cats had come to eat, except one. My daughter and I were about to retire for the night. Every evening our large orange and white shorthair cat would come to the door and request entrance. Without fail, here he would be at the appointed hour. The appointed time came and went. My daughter comes to me concerned.

“Where is Rascal? Is he in the garage or something?”

“I don’t know. Have you looked for him?” I started to walk around the house.

We walked into the back yard and it was obviously deserted. We were calling his name the entire time we searched. We even walked down the street looking for him. An entire hour lapsed and no Rascal. Now, he is our favorite cat. He is a huge animal who loves lasagna and drinking out of your glass. I have always loved his greenish yellow eyes. He always seems to be saying, “I know a secret you don’t know.”

I always call him my best friend, guardian of my home and top mouser. He shuts his eyes halfway as to say, “You are privileged to know me and you are welcome.” I swear sometimes I feel as though he is not a cat at all, but some mysterious being hiding in a cat body to protect me. In a way, I feel he is like a guardian for my home.

Back to the search…we searched inside the house too, just in case he was hiding under the table or sleeping under a bed. It was hard to see the worried look on my daughter’s face. Sure, she was 17, but she loved that cat. She finally went to bed and only my younger son and I were up. The curtains in the back of the house were open and a bright flash caught my attention. I gazed out the back window along with my son and we saw it lit up like bright noonday. Actually it was brighter. It was more a bright, pure white light. The entire yard was illuminated with no shadows at all. The light was not moving in anyway. I thought it rather odd. There was no sound. I figured it was a search helicopter doing the rounds. I rushed to the front of the house and there was nothing. No helicopter, no sound (they are very loud). It was absolutely silent except for the distant roar of the freeway.

My daughter and son came out to see what I was up to. A few moments later, Rascal comes sauntering out of the back yard as if nothing had happened. I told the story of the light to my daughter and she scowled at me suspiciously, until my son piped up and supported the whole story with his version.

You tell me…what is up with that? Sometimes I wonder if he went for a ride. “Rascal, the UFO riding cat.” Now when I look at him in the eyes, he pretends to be just any cat. If I look at him long enough, I swear he’s smirking at me!

I don’t have an answer. I can’t figure out where he was. He is never late for dinner.

Well

Just to be on the safe side of things, will you put out a good word for me with your cat? ;-)

I am afraid

he left on his ship about a year ago.

I might mention you to the remaining cats and see if they can get a message to him.

Dead cat

Perhaps I saw the soul of a dead creature leaving its body. I should look for a dead cat round the back of my office methinks!

Perceval

An Elemental!

Seriously. I thought of this post when I read this in The Secret Teachings of All Ages. This is copied from the chapter on The Elements and their Inhabitants:

The third group of elementals is the salamanders, or spirits of fire, who live in that attenuated, spiritual ether which is the invisible fire element of Nature. Without them material fire cannot exist; a match cannot be struck nor will flint and steel give off their spark without the assistance of a salamander, who immediately appears (so the mediæval mystics believed), evoked by friction. Man is unable to communicate successfully with the salamanders, owing to the fiery element in which they dwell, for everything is resolved to ashes that comes into their presence. By specially prepared compounds of herbs and perfumes the philosophers of the ancient world manufactured many kinds of incense. When incense was burned, the vapors which arose were especially suitable as a medium for the expression of these elementals, who, by borrowing the ethereal effluvium from the incense smoke, were able to make their presence felt.

The salamanders are as varied in their grouping and arrangement as either the undines or the gnomes. There are many families of them, differing in appearance, size, and dignity. Sometimes the salamanders were visible as small balls of light. Paracelsus says: "Salamanders have been seen in the shapes of fiery balls, or tongues of fire, running over the fields or peering in houses." (Philosophia Occulta, translated by Franz Hartmann.)

Mediæval investigators of the Nature spirits were of the opinion that the most common form of salamander was lizard-like in shape, a foot or more in length, and visible as a glowing Urodela, twisting and crawling in the midst of the fire. Another group was described as huge flaming giants in flowing robes, protected with sheets of fiery armor. Certain mediæval authorities, among them the Abbé de Villars, held that Zarathustra (Zoroaster) was the son of Vesta (believed to have been the wife of Noah) and the great salamander Oromasis. Hence, from that time onward, undying fires have been maintained upon the Persian altars in honor of Zarathustra's flaming father.

One most important subdivision of the salamanders was the Acthnici. These creatures appeared only as indistinct globes. They were supposed to float over water at night and occasionally to appear as forks of flame on the masts and rigging of ships (St. Elmo's fire). The salamanders were the strongest and most powerful of the elementals, and had as their ruler a magnificent flaming spirit called Djin, terrible and awe-inspiring in appearance. The salamanders were dangerous and the sages were warned to keep away from them, as the benefits derived from studying them were often not commensurate with the price paid. As the ancients associated heat with the South, this corner of creation was assigned to the salamanders as their drone, and they exerted special influence over all beings of fiery or tempestuous temperament. In both animals and men, the salamanders work through the emotional nature by means of the body heat, the liver, and the blood stream. Without their assistance there would be no warmth.
