Global warming is at or near the point of no return.
Food is beginning to show signs of scarcity now that ethanol has become an item.
Airlines can no longer handle the traffic.
All of the earthquake fault lines on the West Coast are overdue.
The lower middle class can no longer afford a University education.
We are fighting a war and can't even decide if we are winning or not.
U.S. healthcare is in decline - 37th in the world in terms of quality - the most expensive in the world.
Gym classes in school have almost disappeared; science classes are losing ground.
Political polarization in America is like no other time since the Civil War. Liberals are called communists or socialists. Conservatives are called fascists.
Gun licensing is up.
Could be 2012 is the end!!

I share your pessimism, more than I would like to.
But we should never give up and think that since everyhting is going to Hell we might aswell give up. No.
Many people have felt they were living in the End Days, it's part of the judeo-christian philosophy, that the Kingdom or the coming of the Messiah is "just around the corner", and many people were manipulated because of that.
We CAN take action. We're doing it right now by sharing our thougts and thinking of things that are disregarded by our present materialistic society: the true nature of consciousness, the common ground between science & religion, the quest for a higher truth.
I also think something interesting could happen in 2012. But even if no UFO ends up landing on the White House's lawn, or the mayas come back from whatever mysterious dimension they slipped into, what is stopping us from deciding 2012 is the day WE choose to change our world all by ourselves, and without no magical intervention?
I think it was Terence Mckenna who said that "for all practical porpuses, we should act as if the end of the world had already happened". I believe he had a point there.
We should never despair, eventhough the temptation is so great—believe me: I KNOW what I'm talking about here—We really have no choice but to be optimistic.

yes sure, the end is near, the sky is falling.
Except that the end has been near for at least 2000 years, and old tradition from the Roman empire. That tradition was taken over by the Christian churches. While the end has been just around the corner for all this time, the Roman empire lasted about 1500 years past when the end was near.
I doubt that the concept was invented as recently as 2000 years ago, it is probably much older.
Let's face it there is money to be made from the end being, and the sky falling. Politicians, kings, priests, shamans, and gun dealers. Building contractors and Home Depot, so you can construct your nuclear proof bunker. Companies selling canned food. Those friendly couples who sell you bibles, so that your soul will be safe upon the impending end of the world.
On the other hand, many people find life unpleasant. Especially people who are reasonably well off. They seem to want to wake up from a bad dream.
I say the end is not near. We have to deal with this world, unpleasant as it may seem. There is only one reality, and this is it.
