Tibet or not Tibet ?

Some news outlets say that there is stuff happening in Tibet, demonstrations and bloody stuff. But mostly it is quit, especially on the net.

Given that this area is far away, and perhaps overly romanticised, does anyone know what is going on there ?

protests

I've been reading about protests and confrontations with the police. News are confusing, some speak of more than a hundred deaths, some speak of less. Whatever the truth, it seems to be the bloodiest events in 20 years on that region.

The protests have also happened in India.

It was bound to happen, obviously. The tibetans are taking advantage that the eyes of the world will be all fixed on China during the Olimpic Games.

CBC quotes the Dalai Lama

A report today in the CBC, and yes, it does seem like this is an escalation in the frictions over there, but to tell the truth, I really don't see where it is necessarily pre-olympic opportunism -- I can think of oodles more ways to get myself shot than trying to make a 6 o'clock newcast.

"Whether intentionally or unintentionally, some cultural genocide is taking place," said the Dalai Lama, who is living in exile in India along with about 125,000 other Tibetan refugees.

"There is some kind of discrimination and Tibetans in their own land quite often are treated as second-class citizens," he added.

There are reports that as many as 80 protesters have been killed. The figures could not be independently verified as China heavily restricts foreign media access to Tibet.

The crackdown came after five days of peaceful protests in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, escalated into violence on Friday, with Buddhist monks launching the fiercest challenge to Beijing's rule over the region in nearly two decades.
