Guillermo del Toro to direct "The Hobbit"

Since New Line Cinema execs have had more than a few issues with Academy Award-winner Peter Jackson, they have turned to Guillermo to see if he is willing to bring the prequel of Tolkien's trilogy, The Hobbit, to the big screen.

Apparently, it is confirmed. He has accepted.

Guillermo is one of my favorite directors and it fills me with pride to see the accomplishments this fellow mexican has obtained. Nevertheless, it kind of makes me sad that Jackson will not be able to complete his full vision of Tolkien's world because of petty quarrels with studio suits.

Now, I'm sure that Guillermo will use his wonderfully creative -and very twisted- imagination to explore new things about Bilbo and his companions...

But if they cast some other than Sir Ian Mckellen for Gandalf, that would REALLY piss me off!
...
On other things, Guillermo will also bring to us Lovecraft's The Mountain of Madness in 2010. That sure will be one scary flick.

Peter Jackson

Heya Red,

I read elsewhere that the Peter Jackson dispute was resolved in December, and the Hobbit has been on fast track ever since. However, Jacksons does not have time to write or direct, so he will be the producer of the movie.

Although it does sound exactly like a conflict resolution - Jackson gets his name on the movie, but the studio keeps him from directing as they had threatened, but they still get to use his name for audience goodwill...

Looking forward to it all the same!

Kind regards,
Greg

That's great news!

It is so great that Peter will still be involved in the production of the film. Sadly the dispute has delayed this project too many years. But I have no doubt it will be worth it.

Besides which, I think Peter and Guillermo were separated at birth...

Hellboy 2

I was hoping Guillermo would direct Lovecraft's At The Mountains Of Madness, but a hobbit movie with singing dwarves will be just as good. I'm sure Guillermo and Peter Jackson being in the same room together defies some cosmic law of the universe and will cause our reality to implode.

Ian McKellen must be recast as Gandalf, and it'd be brilliant if they can somehow get Ian Holm to play Bilbo again. Remember at the start of Fellowship, Gandalf remarks to Bilbo before his birthday party, "You haven't aged a day!". So theoretically, Holm can still play Bilbo circa The Hobbit. McKellen and Holm's scenes in The Fellowship Of The Ring were brilliant, I'd love to see them together again. Kinda scary Fellowship was 6 years ago already.

I'm looking forward to Hellboy 2.

Me too!

I also wish Mr Holm to put once more the hairy big feet :-)

Hellboy 2 looks like a great summer flick; but Guillermo has also received a lot fo praise from a movie that he did not direct, but produced, The Orphanage. Has it arrived to australian movie theaters? I have yet to see it, but I'll give it a try this weekend.

speed is relative

But really, "the Hobbit" on fast track? In the book, nothing happens for the first half of the story. Then I quit reading.

If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.

(Bill Clinton, and perhaps others)

How dare you! :-)

You call the whole business with the trolls and the spiders "nothing"? My God man, what does it take to stir you? ;-)

I agree the second half is much more exciting as LOTR was, but I also enjoyed the quiet depictions of Tolkien on more mundane things. Only when you realize how much is at stake you understand the effort to risk loosing it all in pursue of a higher purpose.

Of course, I'm not being objective at all. Tolkien is definitely my favorite author in the english language.

Hobbit Heaven

An interesting fit. Sad that Jackson couldn't do the whole thing. But Hobbit can stand by itself this way.
