around the world in 80 days

Well, actually 57 days and change, by boat. By sailboat that is. One guy, all by his lonesome. As you can see if you read the article, the previous record was held by a smallish woman.

what an adventure!

I suppose that -apart from an incredible stamina and an unbreakabl spirit- the reason of this record lies in new advances in sailing technologies (better materials, CAD designs, etc).

And a large provision of power vars :-)

weather

Acutally I think it results from, as you say, boat design, sail design, but also weather planning. Yes these people are out there alone, and if they get in trouble, then they are really in trouble.

But they have communications, and can plan their way through the weather.

Still the highest paid athletes (bit muscular american football players, elegant soccer players, or expert golf players) probably would not survive this kind of thing, nevermind set records. I think sleep management is also important.

So basically you have to do a lot of things right. I don't know if normal life insurance covers this :)

Well, I have read that the people who embark in these kind of record-breaking endeavours practice some sort of "power naps" sleep cycles, that are designed to make a healthy normal adult function normally with only 2 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period.

Personally I would like to know if humans could mantain this kind of sleep deprivation during long terms without any nasty side effects, and without resorting to any kind of drugs.

I'm not a good-morning person, BTW. For me one of the greatest pleasures in life is being all snug in your comfy bed without addessing the hardships of routine. When I was younger I used to get up at 5-6 a.m. to study for a school test, and I found this to be an excellent tool to let he mind absorb without distractions large amounts of info in a relatively short period of time; also the mind in a semi-awake state is much more receptive. I wish I could do that still to read in the morning, but I have become lazy with age -in Mexico we have term better than lazy: huevón; that's me all right ;-)

sleep and dreams

I was critical of professional atheletes, but I am sure I could not do this myself. Survive it, probably, but it would take me a long time. Much more than 80 days, even with the best technology. I'm just not a good enough sailor, and not in good enough physical shape.

Having said that, I am 48 earth years old, and the guy who set the new record is 51. Makes me feel a little bad about myself.

I get up usually about 6 or so, depending on where I live. I get up when the city wakes up, or the moon shines brightly into my eyes. Strangely enoug, the sun doesn't wake me up.

I think the drug that keeps these people awake is adrenaline. Also, most of the time they are in very bad weather, around Antarctica. You would be scared too.

Plus, those energy bars. Sugar. Those things could help.

Amphetamines don't work for that long, neither does cocaine. Amphetamines work for maybe a week or so, as far as I know.

a recipe by Wired

Wired magazine recently gave z recipe for sleeping only 2-hours a day. Sounds interesting, but I guess I would only try it if giant mutant insectoids invaded Earth and I was running for dear life :-)

something like that

Actually, sleeping only for little bits at a time seems to be what those sailors do.

Not entirely unrelated - someont told me, long ago, a lengend to the secret why Napoleon or Caesar could achieve so much. The story was that they could sleep any time of day or night.

Then later I found out how they could do that. You see, I worked very hard, very long hours. And guess what, I was always tired. So I was up there with Napoleon and Caesar - give me 10 minutes, I could sleep for 8 of those 10.
The trick is waking up.

Hehe. Maybe that's what happened all those years with Caesar at the Senate. The emperor was having a nap and Brutus took the opportunity :-)
