3 blocks up, 2 blocks over

Denver police arrest shooter on two counts of first degree murder.

Two killed - inside a house - by one bullet from a high-powered rifle fired from 300 yards away by some idiot 'celebrating' on New Year's Eve! Gee, and when all the fireworks - and gunfire - started, I told a startled KitterRed kitty that there was nothing to worry about. I should have added, as long as we crawl around below window level.

On Christmas Eve, I had to call 911 (again) about the nutcases/drug-dealers across the street, for firing a gun 6 times. Having called 911 on them about every other month for the past 3 years, I'm pretty sure they weren't 'celebrating' anything.

How can you live without ever walking in front of any of your windows - or glass doors? Is it any wonder I now get nervous every time I walk past my kitchen window to pour myself a cup of coffee?

Some people might say I should have expected as much, considering I moved to this apartment over here in 'Taco Flats'. But hey, at least over here I'm behind an iron security fence, with state-of-the-art surveillance cameras all over the place; and, for the most part, I'm also behind two layers of brick & cinderblock walls, with electronic alarms on all the windows and doors. I didn't have any of that security at my last apartment - which was across the street from an exclusive enclave of million-dollar homes in oh-so-upscale unincorporated Littleton -- about a mile and a half from Columbine.

Remember the church shootings in Aurora recently? As far as I concerned, no matter what part of the city you're in, living in Denver sucks.

Enough's enough. At my earliest convenience, I'm moving back to God's country -- where practically everybody owns at least a half dozen guns, and hardly anybody ever gets shot by accident.

My sympathies

Doesn't sound a top place to live in, and don't you feel as if you're in prison behind all that fencing and security? I think I prefer where I live!

my setiments exactly

I was going to post a comment for Kat but couldn't think of anything to say that would not make Kat feel worse....so I didn't.

Anyway...Kathrinn, I have a rather stubborn virus affecting my e-mail. A legacy left over from my son playing "runescape". Nearly have it under controll and will contact you when I do. For now....happy new year and hope you had an enjoyable christmas.

That goes for you as well Kat!

Thanks, Floppy

Happy New Year to you too. Hope you manage to kill the virus - you possibly feel like banning your son from your computer!!

Best wishes, Kathrinn

Just bundle up and stay warm. It is also cold down below the Palmer Divide. What do you consider "God's Country"?

God's Country

Hi udanax,

>>What do you consider "God's Country"?

Deep fried Dixie -- preferably a place so far back in the sticks, I'll have to drive at least 20 miles to get to a WalMart. Near a small town that's big enough to have at least one no-name restaurant (loosely speaking) -- the kind of place that serves you grits with your breakfast whether you ask for them or not.

>>Just bundle up and stay warm. It is also cold down below the Palmer Divide.

The high temps are supposed to get up to around 50 degrees for the next four days, so I'm taking advantage of this 'warm' spell to double my attic insulation -- hired a guy to do it this afternoon.

gun laws - move out of bad areas

sorry to hear about those druggies going wild with guns,

i live in canada and i hear yanks always talking about their rights to bear arms - but in canada they have a few laws and guidelines before anyone can buy or is able to have possession of a firearm - namely to keep longguns out of the hands of people with a unstable mindset.

plus responible gun owners who have kids should lock them up- here in canada we are force to take a safety-education coars on guns.

i was shocked when i took my course many years ago that a bullet can travel 5 miles from a rifle and it comes out spinning and thus acts like a drill on impact.
shotgun acts different 100 yards basically.

thus in canada discharging of rifles in hi residental areas is not allowed do to the threat of hitting someone far away.

guns in canada used for hunting basically so your not allowed to carry them about other than for hunting seasons - and a license is needed then too when is hunting season and heavy fines are given if you are carrying one out of season or no license.

and fines are heavy here and thats whats needed.
its sad to hear even denver now is that bad, tougher laws need with guns and druggies.

maybe your right to move out of denver but maybe some places in CO are great - heres a utube - only if they had that type of lawman in that clip CO would be alot safer i think.

enjoy the scenery and the song.

love the scenery in clip =
dallas divide, san juan mountains, cow creek,
deb meadow kates meadow, horsefly mea,
cimaron mountain, summit at owl creek pass,

hope after you see video you think twice before moving out of state - and if you still want to move ever hear of a place called canada - better and with global warming its feels like hawaii north - lol

technical stuff

Well the first detail techincal stuff - if you fire big gun for no good reason (celebrating is not a good reason), and you hit some one, that is a serious offence. Murder if you aimed at a house. If you just shot in the air in an isolated location, it is at least manslaughter. There are ways to make noise, for celebration, that don't involve bullets flying for miles. Can't get blanks? Shoot into the ground. Or shoot into some other place where the bullet won't come out.

As for the gun education stuff - yes everyone should know this. Not just people who want to own a gun, but everyone. Same as everyone should know about how cars and buses can run you over, even if you don't drive a car or a bus. And many more things like that. Smoking, alcohol, falling from a great height. We all know that these things can be quite harmful.

There seems to be a concept "I don't want to know about guns, then they won't hurt me". I don't understand that concept.

Whatever is dangerous, we should understand as much about it as we can. Being ignorant just makes us more vulnerable.

There is some other stuff, but I said my main point.

Oh wait, another one not related to guns :)

When you go to the Southern United States, you want to be a little careful about calling people "yanks". A few people there are not quite over the events from 1865 or so.

finer details

well like i mention - canada has the safety education on firearms and hunting. and they teach about how to handle gun, point gun, aim, and what you are to shoot act and take the safety protocols into effect.

thats what appears to be missing in alot of this people that do most of the damage.

and actually firing into the ground could be dangerous too,
one must think - how soft is the ground, rocks, and what lies undereath - you could kill some type of animal and thats a no-no in canada - because they are explicit anything you kill you must eat - and you must obtain the proper license.

also dont forget man-maded things could be hit and could cause damage - the safety course and education teach you that.

also in canada they teach - you must id what you shoot first, not like so many other places where if they hear a sound they shoot without iding what it is.
in fact i think the vice pres of states shoot someone in a hunting trip he fail to see his buddy.

and yes i use the slang word of "yanks; and yes i could imagine some southerns are still upset about losing the war,
and may hate if you call them a yank.

but i guess if i do go to states i shouldnt tell them i live in canada, some probably havent forgotten how the canadians burn down alot of the white house -- thats why they had to paint it white and thus the name "white house: is fitting for it.

but educating is the key - but what is there excuse
when they are educated and just dont care.
like usa and china with high pollution - emittions they know it causing alot of deaths, illnesses and
they release this stuff and they dont know exactly who will get hurt or killed but they know it will do damage.
its just like closing your eyes and firing a shotgun when you surrounded by a defencless harmless crowd - you dont know which ones that will get hurt by it but know its going to do damage to someone,

gun control

Some people say that gun control is hitting what you are aiming at. And yes, there is a time to shoot at people. I've never done it, and hope that I never have to.
