Should be able to give you a sneak peek at the upcoming Daily Grail anthology tomorrow (and a name)...
- Arthur C. Clarke remembers Sputnik (and the Space Age in general) on its 50th anniversary.
- And what of the next 50 years?
- NASA: China may win the new Space Race. Sounds like someone's pushing for some increased funding. Although I think "NASA: Iran set to win Space Race, with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Osama Bin Laden to be the first men on Mars, dancing on an American flag" would work better for them.
- Asteroid renamed in honour of Star Trek's Sulu.
- McCanns to consult top UK psychics?
- Apparently all of us here at TDG need to grow up. Perhaps Mr Linklater should acquaint himself better with topics before he labels them 'mythology'? Looking forward to Loren Coleman's deconstruction of this one...
- British Stone Head mystery solved.
- Peruvian meteor crater to disappear within a couple of months.
- The 'Queen of Ayahuasca' passes away.
- Building a computer that reads minds.
- Squelching the dark past: the mechanics of memory suppression.
- Why do migratory birds fly in a V-formation?
- Researchers discover link between schizophrenia, autism, and maternal flu.
- Go East Old Man! Neanderthals reached China's doorstep.
- Gold rings create first true invisibility cloak.
- Five things Hollywood thinks computers can do.
- Grass-munching bugs could power rural phones.
- 2007 ozone hole 'smaller than usual'.
- Believers turn into skeptics after alien implant lecture at New Zealand conference.
- Get set for a deluge of ghost pictures in the near future.
- Tin foil hat for a fetus? Check out 'MummyWraps'.
- Court says prisoner not entitled to Odinism rituals.
- Researcher claims: "Australian actresses are plagiarizing my quantum mechanics lecture to sell printers". Now that doesn't happen to you every day.
Thanks Rick.
Quote of the Day:
I hope that nations can at last see better reasons for exploring space, and that future decisions would be informed by intelligence and reason, not the macho-nationalism that fuelled the early Space Race.
Arthur C. Clarke

Linklater's snidery
The time has come to wean ourselves off this fatal addiction to mythology.
Gods do I wish Joseph Campbell was alive to debate this. Linklater's ignorance of the difference between 'mythology' and 'legend' is abhorrent. Gah, I'd write more, but I'm too angry.
Yeah, but...
Had he mentioned religion, and Christianity specifically, would you be so angry? 'Cause I've heard the same points being made about people's faith of choice right here at TDG without any words like "ignorance" and "abhorrent" being mentioned (well, maybe myself and a couple of other readers).
Which is why it's always just good manners to respect people and their beliefs, passions and interests, even you don't hold the same.
Competition
Arthur C. Clarke, who I hear is a moderately intelligent person, should know the inherent benefits of competition in the progress and success of man. From the Neolithic to the space age, there are some basic facts that have always held true. Sure it has its ugly traits, but on the whole it's the engine of success. But hey, when have ideologues ever let the lessons of history, logic or even common sense get in their way? Ivory towers are comfy places. So I hear.
Perhaps he is wishing
that humanity could now base their progress on another base than a purely materialistic one?
There has indeed been much material progress through science and technology on the other hand it is striking how little if any progress at all happened on the psychological side.
What would an evolved humanity base its advancement on? Certainly not on the premise of its animalistic insecurity. Competition has been based on just these mechanisms whereas cooperation would have led humanity much further, if man could deal with that concept within the context of integral honesty.
Gold rings create first true invisibility cloak
Mr. Tolkien would be so proud! :-)

Too good to pass up
Actresses using QM to sell inkjets? Priceless:
"Um, so, like, this is Jessica Simpson and, so, when an observation, like, collapses the quantum wavefunction or something, the weird little subatomic particles kinda choose which probability-thingy to become, and really weird stuff happens, y'know? And really cool stuff happens when you use an Epson printer! Okay? Bye!"
Classic. Next, we'll see Paris Hilton on plate tectonics and perhaps Ricky Martin on nonlinear equations.
Marylin
It is often said that Marylin Monroe's personal heroes were: Abraham Lincoln and Albert Einstein.
In fact I once saw this movie which is very funny and thought-provoking, where Marilyin Monroe meets Einstein and she wants to discuss with him the nature of the Universe!

Re: McCanns to consult top UK psychics?
What makes the British so batty!!!!!!!!
Compliment
Good morning everyone,
As a Brit, am I to take that as a compliment?
I suspect it is the sheer diversity of sub-cultures that exist under the veneer of Brit culture. This, and our natural eccentricity.

I'm fanatical about moderation

Paul, as an ex-Brit I think Pommie eccentricity can best be explained by the fact that we greatly venerate our national icon Big Ben - the bell is cracked (which is why it has its distinctive sound). There isn't a single person in the UK who would have Big Ben sound any other way!

The bells, the bells!
