Looking Beyond the Sales Pitch of the Singularity

In my latest thought-crime for the Intrepid blog, I try to present some of my reasons why I'm still reticent to buy into the whole Transhumanist thingie.

I'm very reticent to buy into Transhumanism! I think that Transhumanism could be dangerous.
Has anyone considered the over population problem that Transhumanism will cause?
Has anyone analyzed the potential Socio-Economic consequences of Transhumanism?
What do you think?

I loosely approach both of those issues in my little personal caveats. Obviously the easiest problem to recognize is the huge inequalities that would exacerbate between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots'.

The resultant inequalities between the 'haves' and 'have-nots' isn't going to discourage the 'haves'. In fact, in my opinion, it's going to incourage the 'haves'; because, the 'haves' tend to enjoy looking down on people. Therefore, in my opinion, we need to deemphasize it and emphasize arguments that will discourage the 'haves'!
Over Population and Socio-Economic consequences are very disturbing to the 'haves'!

Well, we already experienced several computer revolutions. We know that making innovation widely available benefits all, so we'll have to keep that in mind when the first signs of Transhumanism start to appear.

The 'haves' have been burned badly by the wide availability of technology and they don't understand how dangerous the gap between the 'haves' and 'have-nots' is for them now! If some sanity doesn't return, there may not be any 'haves'; because, the 'haves' will try to rule the world by making transhumanism their exclusive right! If and when this happens, the shit will really hit the fan; because, the 'have-nots' will have nothing left to lose! If fact, the 'have-nots' have very little left to lose now.
So, I strongly recommend that we start both discouraging the 'haves' and educating the 'haves' before it is too late!

Our track record as humans attempting to predict the future ramifications of new technology is pretty dismal, so I am not holding my breath waiting for the singularity. We might just as well decide that biointelligence is so far superior to the most vast machine intelligence that we were barking up the wrong tree all along. It is just as likely that new methods of stimulating gray matter might actually be the intelligence revolution and that the wetware is far superior to the most advanced quantum computers. If the brain turns out to have paranormal abilities that transcend mundane physical laws then it could turn out to be that the brain far outstrips machine intelligence in actual "awareness." The real singularity is just as likely to be the discovery of the true powers of the brain.

There's a certain UFO story I like a lot, about a certain British engineer living in S. Africa driving through the country-side who is asked to stop by a man on the road. The man has a companion who appears to be injured, and asks the engineer to be taken to a certain desolate area, to which he agrees.
When they arrive to the spot he finds to his astonishment there's a landed flying saucer, and the mysterious enter the craft and invite the bewildered man for a little tour.
Being a science-driven individual, the engineer asks the obvious questions re. the craft's propulsion, and the UFOnaut answers with the usual electro-magnetic babble given to all Contactees. The thing that impresses the engineer the most is the sparse simplicity of the saucer's interior, and when he asks where the computers are used to navigate the vessel, the UFOnaut simply shakes his head and replies "no computers."
Was all this a fraud, a deception, or were these UFOnauts the real-life equivalent of Frank Herbert's mentats?
It's interesting food for though, in any case.

At this stage of our evolution, computing power helps us; but, as we evolve mentally, computing power will become obsolete! As such, I Believe that people that opt for physical immortality via a singularity will handicap themselves in the future!

In my opinion, death is an evolutionary event during which we shed our physical body, like a snake sheds its skin, and enter an evolved mental state through which we achieve immortality, possibly through futher incarnations. We are our mental states that are housed in physical bodies. Our bodies with their physical identities experience physical death; but, we never die! This being the case, I honestly believe that the quest for a singularity is a vain attempt to obtain physical immortality and nothing more!
