Entanglements in Esoteric Economics

Over at Intrepid, I mused a little about the over-arching implications of eBay's ban on Esoteric paraphernalia. It's not going to be to everyone's liking though, so consider yourself warned.

your riff knocked loose this riff from me:
we are a storytelling species -- we literally imbue meaning into things
just think of the test where, again and again, when people are sold the exact same burger but one is in a McD's wrapper and the other isn't, the McD's 'tastes better'...
a used car salesperson is literally someone who tells tales...imbuing the cars with more meaning...
we, unfortunately, live in an age where that aspect of our world, when all of us used to live in this type of world, an 'enchanted world', is much weaker, more literal, more pragmatic...
we have people publishing economic truths that say that people overestimate anything they own's price...of course we do -- someone else isn't going to have the meaning that you imbued into the objects you've lived with for so long...
Marxism teaches that reality is, fundamentally, materialistic and without meaning. Marxism is still a powerful idea...
we live within the BS, the worlds that have already been created for us...with the various meanings that they hold and deem to be important and Real...
the psychedelic time, when we lived deeply in stories that our smaller geographical worlds shared, is coming again, appearing again...
and so it goes...

When I was in my 1st year of college, many moons ago, I was taught that each object has 3 types of intrinsic value: use value; status value, and exchange value.
Use value is pretty self-evident. A good hammer has more value than a monocycle.
Status value is dependent on the culture. Maybe in 100 years a Montblanc pen will become worthless when everybody use a tablet to write.
Exchange value is, of course, strongly related to status value. Or at least we're constantly forced to believe that.
But it seems to me you're suggesting we should also take into consideration the narrative value of objects. I guess on rare occasions narrative value might even increase the exchange & status value, if the previous owner happened to be a celebrity.

Ebay has its panties in wad over the press it is indirectly getting from The Dybbuk Box episode on Paranormal Witness in which Ebay figured prominently as the broker for the thing when people wanted it out of their lives. The box truly played hell with lives. The interviewees in the Paranormal Witness episode were all quite convincing about the box's paranormal power and there were "damages" to their lives psychological and material.
Added to that the movie "The Possession" is also based on the Dybbuk Box though I do not know if the Ebay angle was played up in the movie. The movie is splashing as we speak.
Ebay is however bluffing most likely. They will sell anything and everything if they can get away with it. Nothing has changed.

Some Grailers criticized eBay’s decision on a somewhat Libertarian basis: If people are willing to buy that sort of stuff, let them. If someone is dumb enough to fork in 8 grand (!) for a chicken nugget resembling George Washington, then what harm is there in offering a love potion –powerful & fast acting!– for the measly price of $89.99?
I do believe that is similar to my deduction LOL
Really though people will find away around the new rule just as they have done in the past. just like they get around the postal system. you can send a severed head through the mail if you so desire as long as you claim it as "scented candles." i think ebay should pull the plug on some other things first, like the misshapen chicken nuggets or cereal flakes...or softball sized kidney stones :P
i wish they would list what is "BANNED" from ebay. or maybe they are afraid of "the powers that be" ;)

By the way, I sometimes put together "radionics machines," and it is spooky how well they can work. The one linked to below is one of my better known efforts using electrically driven mobius coils, a water vortex, a "Vogel" quartz wand, and orgonite. This one is permanently running in my home. With the proper focused attention it enhances manifestation to the extent that one must be careful what one thinks in its vicinity. The human mind is far stronger than we have been led to think, and the effort put into quashing those abilities and stifling the whole subject with ridicule is in large part a project being run by people who desire that this cat remain stuffed firmly in the bag. Fortunately I only discovered this stuff later in my life when I had more maturity to handle it. Had I been privy to this knowledge as a young man I would probably have got into a lot of trouble and made trouble for others.

That is kind of the overall feeling I am beginning to get about organized, well funded, loutish or trollish skepticism that studiously ignore the empirical. It is just generally wanting to steer the hoi polloi away from the paranormal because it potentially leads to much more empowerment of people, and it also teaches people to lean away from fear eventually. At first blush that sounds paradoxical because the Halloweenish ghost busting shows play up the fear angle, but what is happening is that people are becoming used to paranormal phenomena and starting to stand back from it and be more rational about what they are seeing and hearing. In the process, they are learning that fear is often based on poor information or information that is being controlled by someone else, but once there is understanding about say, paranormal activity, the mind trains itself to stand back like that and examine other areas of the reality that is being forced upon them by a manipulative government and its minion media. Ghosts are just as manipulative as governments.
By the way the SyFy channnel is lately running a sort of "best of" the Ghost Hunters series as they are this afternoon - all the good stuff in close proximity. Some incredible footage and sound.

for our immune system to function well, it needs to be stressed
(a stress-free life = suicide?)
life is the process of learning how to be a human being
(all of life are each an experiment that not necessarily exists to the benefit of other life/experiments...and they interact...some of these interactions are to control their interactions so that their particular style of experiment gets to continue...)
check out Grant Morrison's fine limited series "The Filth"
i'm glad i don't have your device at my place--i'd probably end unconsciously creating (do i already?) all sorts of entities and phenomena..."where are the keys dear?" "they're in the cat again..."

I think that on eBay sellers should be required to offer cross referenceable proof that the items that they want to sell are authentic.

hell yes they should! I demand paperwork! I wish this was possible, but it is unlikely. It may have more backlash against ebay and they may loose sellers which is their prime source of income. for now a 99.9% feedback rating is what I have to go by :P

"Authenticity" can mean anything. What do you think - someone is going to be accused of making a "fake" love potion? Fagettaboutit. Let people get into their own messes and victories. I used to be skeptical about homeopathy until recently at the behest of a friend I tried two preparations and was astounded by their efficacy. There is no way in hell for producers of homeopathic remedies to have the bucks to perform clinical trials. The Amazing Randi backed out of his million dollar trial like scalded goose though, so it may be that the medical industrial complex doesn't really want such trials in the first place. I held my own clinical trial, and I should be allowed to do so in a democracy. We are talking here though about substances that work so subtly that there is no real danger of hurting anyone with them. Ebay should have the right to know whether someone is peddling poison I suppose, but Ebay allows the sale of processed foods on their site and they are laced with excitoxins such as sucralose and MSG. Technically if we are going to start holding sellers' feet to the fire then we should start with the peddlers of excitoxins. Thing is the MSG Institute has a lot more money to lobby with than purveyors of magic elixirs.

you don't know what the person could be putting in those bottles but i guess if you know the seller you know they are safe. it's hard for me to say on the subject because everything i've ever bought on ebay has nothing to do with the supernatural.

Well, I can see the problem with ingestibles, but Ebay's concerns there are not about whether or not the paranormal is a scam. That is why the haunted doll and radionics selling categories are still there for instance. They may have a legitimate issue about what is in ingestibles though - whether they may contain something harmful.

Sure. God knows what might be in there. What if someone thought it'd be cool to put some mercury in there? It does open Ebay to a lot of liability.
As a maker of ormus "trap water" in the past I did sell some of it to people on the ormus Yahoo groups list, and they just had to trust me that I hadn't put anything nasty in it, but I was a member of the ormus community in good standing and well known. Still, they had the right to trust me or not trust me, and i would have been liable I am sure if I poisoned someone. Ebay as a third party middle man is in a tougher position here though.
When I developed a method of entrapping ormes in fired silver and gold metal clay it was a big relief because now I could offer people the ormus experience in the form of a pure silver medallion they could wear around their necks or keep in a pocket. Suddenly the liability issue went down to zero. That is what I like about orgonite too - there is nothing to ingest. It is all field based, and as we see in this link the orgonite category on Ebay is still very much alive despite the fact that no producer can prove any claims made. Caveat Emptor is a precept of democracies the world over. There is a good reason that there is so much repeat business for orgonite makers - the energy feels very good and people come back for more. If someone does not feel it they can return it usually or at least keep their initial purchase to a minimum so as to sample the material without spending much money.

By the way, orgonite made with a clear resin can usually be visually inspected to see if the 3 necessary elements are present. If it is cure/shrink organic resin mixed with metal shavings and a quartz crystal then it will work as orgonite should. The polyesters are favored because they shrink enough to place the embedded quartz crystal in compression.
There is nothing mysterious or complex about making orgonite though I would have to say that the energy itself is pretty darn mysterious and may lead to insights about "dark energy." The theory about how it works is I feel still poorly understood, but people who love the energy do not give a whit about some theory. They are proceeding according to what they feel.
I periodically plug orgonite because I think it is so fantastic, but I try not to be a pest here on this wonderful forum. The best social learning site on the subject is here:

”There were these two men, sharing a railway carriage. They didn’t know each other. They just happened to be travelling together. One of the men had, resting in his lap, a cardboard box with holes punched in the top. After some time spent contemplating what might be inside his travelling companion’s box, the other man at last could not contain his curiosity. He said, “Excuse me, but I couldn’t help noticing your box. Does it contain some variety of animal?” The other man, though obviously surprised by this impertinent intrusion from a stranger, smiled politely as he answered, “You’re absolutely right. There is indeed a creature kept inside this box. And furthermore, I may reveal, the animal in question is a mongoose.”
The first man, who’d initiated the enquiry, was astonsihed by this revelation. Spluttering with surprise, he sought some further explanation of this certainly provocative disclosure made by his strange fellow-traveller. “A mongoose? Sir I must confess I had expected it to be perhaps a cat, or rabbit, not a creature so exotic and outlandish. The animal you mention so excites my curiosity that I must beg you, sir, to tell me more. Where are you bound with such a specimen, if I may be so bold?” The other man, who sat with the perforated box on his lap, shrugged wearily as he replied, “Well, it’s something of a personal matter, as it concerns a family tragedy. However, since I’m confident I may rely on your discretion, I suppose I don’t mind sharing my unfortunate account with you.”
“You see,” the man went on, “this sorry tale concerns my elder brother. He’s always been what I suppose you might refer to as the black sheep of the family. He has for many years indulged himself in a predictable and commonplace array of vices, of which the worst is his fondness for strong spirits. His drinking has progressed until he is now in the final stages of delerium tremens. My brother now sees serpents everywhere, which is the reason I am taking him this mongoose, that he may be rid of them.”
“Excuse me,” the other man interjected, looking puzzled, “But, these snakes your brother sees… aren’t they imaginary snakes?”
“Indeed,” his fellow traveller replied. “But this,” and here he gestured meaningfully to the perforated box set on his lap, “is an imaginary mongoose.”‘

And yet you never know - objects can hold energy. I personally would not invest my money in a poorly photographed blob on Ebay, but the folks who passed The Dybbuk Box around on Ebay learned the hard way that innocent looking objects can hold a lot of energy.
Now here is a category of skulls I have dipped into myself - exquisitely carved quartz skulls. The shape goes into resonance with your own skull and interesting things ensue.

I have real animal skulls that I can feel energy off of, granted I never killed the beasts and the places i got them from didn't kill them either, so i don't feel guilty in owning them. I have a coyote, a magpie which was sadly a road kill, and a turtle skull I found on a beach. I also have tons of cow bones I find at an old dairy site that I use in sculpture. They are fascinatingly complex, the most interesting part about humans are their skulls, as with many creatures.
As for your crystal skulls, I got half way down the search and got distracted by this woman's hair O_O:

Once you get into the current crystal skull scene and the fabulous carvings coming out of China you realize that all of the woo woo skulls being paraded around as ancient were in fact of relatively recent manufacture and not the product of the ancient Mayans, Egyptians, etc. That is not to say that some of them would not have extraordinary energies, but they weren't made thousands of even hundreds of years ago
