Mexicans: The New Lepers
Posted by red pill junkie at 15:23, 05 May 2009Today is 5 de Mayo. It is a very important holiday in the Mexican calendar, a day of festivity and rejoice. Obviously given the current circumstances, it's not the time to celebrate.
But now comes word of troubling developments around the world, where Mexicans are becoming the subject of prejudice & racism that many people were waiting for. We have become the new lepers of the world.
The most extreme cases are reported in China, where Mexican citizens visiting the country for business or tourism were rounded up and kidnapped by the Chinese authorities, and were later taken away to a hotel to held in a quarantine, despite that fact that they didn't show the symptoms of the flu.
That some nations feel compelled to cancel flights to Mexico is understandable (even though the WHO clearly specified that this wasn't necessary and wasn't going to stop the spreading of the flu at this point); that there are isolated events of racist attacks on Mexican citizens abroad was to be expected; but to take away innocent civilians merely for the origin of their passport is quite another thing. Not only that, but when you find a Mexican arriving in a plane, and you only take the Mexican away while leaving behind his/her friends only because they don't have a Mexican passport —and you don't disturb the rest of the passangers who might have been exposed to the malevolent virus carried by the Mexican host— is completely IDIOTIC.
It's always easier to do foolish things that give the impression that you are dealing with a problem, than to actually trying to solve it. The slaughter of pigs in Egypt & even the killing of 3 boars in Baghdad's Zoo are only a PR solution instead of an actual remedy to the outbreak. If only there were a virus that attacked stupid politicians!
The saddest part of it, is that Mexicans have ALWAYS been open & generous with all the visitors that come to our land. It's quite ironic actually, if we weren't like that, perhaps the virus wouldn't have spread so fast around the globe.
To any Mexican staying abroad reading these lines: Feliz 5 de Mayo!
[UPDATE] The Mexicans detained in China have left the country.
...Psst! Canucks: Looks like you're next, eh?

And fear kills the mind. I work with the public at a year round produce/farmers market. Everyone has to buy food. We have signs, and labels on everything. You'd think there wasn't a one. People can be given all the info, and will still make the wrong decision. Looking for local strawberries in April, and we won't have them till June. I'm lying! People have NO CLUE where food comes from. Happens every day. If I created a virus it would kill the stupid. And if you can't make your way around a produce mart, your stupid!
Have a wonderful holidaze, have a drink for me, since I can't anymore.

People get upset if their favourite fruit or veggies are out of season.
Then they get upset if, in the middle of the Canadian winter, it is locally grown in a hothouse (yes they do that here). Because of the energy used, burning oil for electricity and stuff like that. Which we don't do here, we burn coal, or use hydro or nuclear.
Worried about CO2? Compare the CO2 output from naturally grown veggies from California, or from Chile, to hothouse stuff from 10 miles away, including all the shipping.
Does anyone know which is better?
Here in my local supermarkets, and the farmer's markets, they have signs, product of such and such country.
But this still does not tell me anything. Product of USA, product of Canada. Yeah, that narrows it down to within 6 time zones. 3000 miles of so of transportation, at least. Or maybe from 10 or 20 miles away.
Sure for the berries I can go, at the right time of year, to a local farm and pick them up. But I have to drive there just for the berries. Burn 2 liters of gasoline to get 3 servings of ecologically correct berries? Is that a good idea?
You are right bladerunner, it is not so obvious what the best solution is.

If it were not for the unwarranted thuggery, it would be laughable in comparison to the Chinese government record on public health issues. They are poisoning their environment needlessly at breakneck speed, producing toxic counterfeit consumer goods, and turning huge stretches of land into desert waste. They really do have larger concerns.

With Orwell's '1984', you learn how useful it is for autoritarian governments to exploit dissident threats... be those real threats, imaginary or a combination in between.
So yeah. let's exploit the Mexicans, so that the world and our people forget about those scandals of the products laced with melanine, lead and who knows what else.

"bureaucrats", apparently my spelling is correct, but to be honest, it seems ridiculous. Such as the animal itself.
Anyway, in China (and other places), if you are found to be not careful enough you get blamed in a serious way. If you are too careful, and put people in confinement for a week or so without good reason, there is no damage.
So, as a pencil pusher, what do you do? You have no understanding from your pencils and papers of what is going on. And let us be honest, those of us with nice computers don't know either.
Even if I was a genetic biologist, I don't have any of the date. I am not, and I don't have any data outside the news media.
So if I was a Chinese official who is likely to go to jail or worse if I let one (1) Mexican or Canadian infected person go infect Chinese, I would be really careful.
On the other hand, many Chinese were on the same flights from Mexico. But that is probably harder to detect, I don't know.

Exactly, so are those on observation, confined in concentration camps, exhiled from the country or what?
I understand the fear that make countries be extra-careful around Mexicans; the cancelling of a flight is disappointing and sad, but I can still find it understandable, as a private citizen.
But this witch-hunt of Mexicans in China is just plain dumb. They might as well had prevented the plane with Mexican tourists aboard —some of them even began their trip elsewhere, not n Mexico!—from landing in China, or dettained the plane in the airport, charge it with fuel and send it back.
But no, they discriminated people based solely on the origin of their passport. Not very scientific or diplomatic in my book.
There's caution, there's ignorance, and there's stupidity. Chinese authorities showed the latter.
Hell, why don't they ban all imports of Mariachi music CDs too?? maybe the virus can be catched that way! You never know, right? :-P

Oh I think it is more than one:
I think it is all of those. And you forgot xenophobia.
But mainly there is CYA.

It's also PR: you exploit foreigners or minorities to give the illusion that they care for the main population.

Sure, we had a similar concept in university - Non Mea Culpa Est. Not MY fault.
You blame those who are not there to defend themselves. Or who don't speak the local language. Or those who look different.
A very common method.

That's how much it lasted the flight of the Mexicans who were in China, while the plane stopped in different locations picking them up.
58 hours. Nobody in the plane was allowed to get out.
And there are still some Mexicans dettained in China. After they release them, it's anyone's guess how they will leave the country, considering China has cancelled air flights to Mexico.
Hopefully their journey won't last as much Marco Polo's ;-)

PS: We're just commenting the blog post using a lot of uncouth language, that's all.
