Earth Boring Machines and "The Sound"

The strange "sound" with it's seismic hum and sometimes hornish howl is continuing to be reported around the world. The spiffy giant underground boring machines look like obvious candidates for the sound source. Some of these thing must make a hell of a racket. The more interesting question is why the apparent flurry of underground boring these day?

those are friggin HOOGE machines
(i wonder if one could rig up a device to detect the sounds of that machine and then use it akin to a metal detector?)
