Aye Aye Boson or About Time Higgs
Posted by alanborky at 22:21, 07 Jul 2012I’m over at Life’s Little Mysteries reading Natalie Wolchover’s What Is the Higgs Boson? ('God Particle' Explained) and she gives this highly interesting description of Peter Higgs’ 1964 explanation for what causes matter to seem solid - ‘a three-dimensional "field" that permeates space and drags on everything that trudges through it. Some particles have more trouble traversing the field than others, and this corresponds to them being heavier.’
If this field really existed Higgs predicted then a corresponding particle’d be discovered – the Higgs boson.
Due to a variety of weird experiences I’ve been undergoing since infancy though I’ve long suspected other possibilities.
Consciousness for one.
Time for another.
Setting aside Energy and Space to keep things simple imagine firing a bullet which takes a second to travel the length of a thousand foot chamber.
Now imagine for some reason we want it to take twice as long without altering the bullet or the means of propulsion.
One way to do it’d be to slow down Time.
Another’d be to fill the chamber with a substance just solid enough to make the bullet take double the time.
Yet what if the two options actually amount to the same thing?
What if the reason it takes so much longer for a bullet to travel through Lead as opposed to Air’s because Lead’s composed of a much slower form of Time?
If there’s anything to this idea then confirming the Higgs boson won’t so much answer all our current questions as unleash vast legions of hitherto unsuspected new ones.
