For Anthony -- Labour Mauled in London Election
Posted by Rick MG at 00:11, 03 May 2008Is the writing on the wall for Gordon Brown? The Conservative Party's Boris Johnson demolished Labour to become London's new mayor.
But is the C word really an improvement on Brown?

'Tis a good day here in Britain. The traitorous bunch of conmen are hopefully breathing their last. I can't think of any government that has ever done so much in Britain to trash everything it stands for.
Will the big 'C' be any better? I don't know yet. Most mainstream political parties are inept managers nowadays. I want to see Independents in Parliament, whittling away the party system, and getting rid of grey politicians, in grey suits, offering grey debate, and grey policies ...
Which brings me, Earthling, To Boris. Leave him alone! He may be pompous, he may make mistakes, he may have a 'bad hair' life, but he's a character, an eccentric - and my God we need some of them in politics.

I'd have to plump for your option B, Anthony, though I do quite like Boris.
Earthling, as far as I can work out, the hair is an occasional symptom of being born into the British upper class and educated at boarding school, though I'm ignorant of the precise mechanism by which it happens.
If you think Boris' coif is remarkable, you really should check out that of his colleague, Michael Fabricant. Simply amazing.

For those who don't know of him, here are some typical Boris quotes:
"Yes, cannabis is dangerous, but no more than other perfectly legal drugs. It's time for a rethink, and the Tory party - the funkiest, most jiving party on Earth - is where it's happening."
"I think I was once given cocaine but I sneezed so it didn't go up my nose. In fact, it may have been icing sugar."
"It is hard to think of a single Chinese sport at the Olympics, compared with umpteen invented by Britain, including ping-pong, I’ll have you know, which originated at upper-class dinner tables and was first called whiff-whaff."
"Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chances of owning a BMW M3."
"The dreadful truth is that when people come to see their MP, they have run out of better ideas."
"The proposed ban on incitement to “religious hatred” makes no sense unless it involves a ban on the Koran itself."

I want to congratulate you, Matt. You've certainly got to know your vowels when speaking of Boris' colleague.
Perceval, you've definitely edited those quotes. Not one 'ah', 'err', 'hhmm' or 'oh' :-)

Hair style or bald people,
I don't know that much about the significance of London city stuff, compared to the UK global politics. I don't know how important it is on the larger scale.
Perhaps someone from London, and/or the UK can say things about this?
In other countries, local Berlin politics have little importance in German federal and global matters.
In the US, the mayor of Washington DC is not that important, in international matters. Even the mayor of New York City, which is not even the state capital, has little to say in foreign policy. And if you think that New York City is not important in the world ....
So how does this work ? Someone explain it to me. Ok, I understand "money", for the world part. But what else ?

The London Mayoral election was part of local elections throughout the UK on the same day. Labour had its worse result in 40 years, and if it had been the General Election, voting for MPs in Parliament rather than local councils, Labour's present 66 seat majority would have changed to a Conservative majority of, if I remember right, 198 seats.
Hair raising indeed.

Not until recently, the president appointed a "regent" as mayor of Mexico city, since it's the place where the 3 governmental powers reside. But then things changed and the charge of mayor became an elected position; since then the left has controlled Mexico city, and it has brought both good and very bad things aswell, since the leftist party is always fond of finding ways to get in the way of the Federal government's plans. They (the leftist party) kept several streets blocked to protest against the 2006 federal election, and have done other things to let the President know they own the city.
The current mayor of Mexico city, Marcelo Ebrard, is thought to be a prime contender for the next presidential election, so it is almost a given that if you were mayor of Mexico, you can contend for the presidency; that's why it is now such an important position.
