¥ Wanted ¥ Protest Sign Ideas €

I plan on attending the rallies being held by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on the 30th of October in Washington D.C. and in need of assistance. What I'm looking for is some assistance from my fellow TDG readers in helping me come up with an awesome idea for a protest sign to carry around while there. I'm not going to look for any peculiarities so any idea is all good, the more outlandish the better.

Bring on the creativity!

FYI. If your worried about any obscure agenda I may hold then don't fret. My only wish is for utopian peace and personal freedom(yes, weed is one of those freedoms :)

I often wonder about people who can go to a protest for the Progressive or Liberal agenda. We already have a constitution, laws and a history that many of us were ok with prior to communism in this country. Do you have a job or are you independently wealthy to be able to afford taking off and participating in such goings on. I hope this does not offend you, but I just would like to know who can do things like this? I have been in the media for eons and know whereof most folks do issue forth out of their convictions, but why do you do these things? I was an emplacement for the democratic party for many years and know the strategy, but why is it still being done? Don't we all have better things to do than disrupt incessantly (if that is what you are going to do)? With all due respect, I just want to know, that's all.

Hey, Enigmni Freak

I take no offense whatsoever. But to answer your questions...

Do I have a job? I certainly do $$$
How do I have time to go? It's on a Saturday :D
Why do I do these things? It's my first time(is there a cherry for that?)

You do have a very valid point in questioning ones drive to do such things. Personally, I don't like our government or any government for that matter, not that all governments are bad it's just that they have been pillaged and raped and exploited over and over again. The constitution is something different. Does that thing still exist? As for the rallies themselves... I probably won't agree with 98% of the people there, but as long as they are light hearted, well intentioned, and peaceful then these are my people. I'm just aiming for utopia when they are aiming for retirement and healthcare and probably bringing the bailed out banks to justice.

All in all if there is a possibility for something truly good to come of this then consider me tickled. I hope I answered your questions well enough.

Maybe you guys take democracy for granted. but for those of us who are new in the game, we find there's plenty of reason to attend a rally for a worthy cause.

It's precisely those people that don't care much about reunions and rallies who benefit more from attending. if anything, you discover a sense of "belonging" with people you've never met before.

That's why I, for instance, have attended marches in Mexico organized to protest against insecurity. The last one I went with my sister, my nephew and my 68-year-old dad (at the time).

I remember that my dad told me how he watched one very important march that happened in 1968 in Mexico, to protest the unlawful invasion on the National University's premises by the military (before the massacre at Tlatelolco). My dad was a young accountant working on a small firm; he watched the parade during his lunch hour and then returned to work.

See video

I've always felt he regretted NOT to have participated in the march at that time. i think he accompanied me to the other one to rectify the error.

Being part of a community demands active participation.

Here's an oldie, sort of... though not exactly a sign.

(If you know the tune, you can sing it and make the news!)

Give me an 'F'!
Give me a 'U'!
(: You know the rest :)

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong brains,
Those political parties need your help again.
Got themselves in a terrible jam,
Sticking it to old Uncle Sam!
So, put down your laptop and pick up a sign,
We're gnna make it to primetime.

And it's one, two, three,
What are we voting for?
Don't ask me, I don't really care,
The fix is in and that ain't fair;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the ballot box,
Well there ain't no one that's gonna tell,
Whoopee! we're all going to hell.

well, come on incumbents, let's move fast;
Your big chance has come at last!
Gotta go out and get those votes —
The only good tea party is one on a boat!
And you know that elections can only be won,
By slinging shit on those bums!

And it's one, two, three,
What are we voting for?
Don't ask me, I don't really care,
The fix is in and that ain't fair;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the ballot box,
Well there ain't no one that's gonna tell,
Whoopee! we're all going to hell.

Well...

... come on Wall Streeters, don't move slow,
This old recession just has to go!
There's plenty good money to be made,
By helping yourself to cash from the trade!
Just hope and pray that they'll bail you out,
When the Chinese pull your clout!

And it's one, two, three,
What are we voting for?
Don't ask me, I don't really care,
The fix is in and that ain't fair;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the ballot box,
Well there ain't no one that's gonna tell,
Whoopee! we're all going to hell.

Well, come on all you oldsters and teens,
You know your neighbors are all ee-ville fiends!
They voted for the other guy last time 'round,
So, it's time to stomp their asses into the ground!
Be the first partisan warrior on your block,
To have election slogans written on your socks!

And it's one, two, three,
What are we voting for?
Don't ask me, I don't really care,
The fix is in and that ain't fair;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the ballot box,
Well there ain't no one that's gonna tell,
Whoopee! we're all going to hell.

Many things have been tried by previous generations, and many times the old folks have failed.

That is not a reason to give up trying.

Sure I said it's hopeless over there. I didn't say they should stop trying :)
Actually I was mainly complaining about apportioning of blame in that particular conflict, blaming it on the location instead.

So they are all innocent victims of circumstances over there. Is that better ?

I have been privy to some strange stuff during my associations with my Cherokee ancestors, and a research institute in my hometown. Then when I was an administrator at the university, I always enjoyed the beers with my colleagues and the evenings of deep thought. We got deep back then. We fell upon the fact that as entities occupying forms here in Time/Space, we leverage in virtually every instant that we exist. Otherwise we would not be in control of the aspect. We took human leveraging to the max with those beers. After a while we could not even stand up to leverage across the room. It was a great experiment. We discovered how humans leverage in truths and illusions and the tools for such are many. We wrote papers and had great fun in the halls of intellect, using our new paradigm to analyze our every output. Then we moved into Godly Leveraging and that got really hard. The Egyptians helped us out there. The Tree of Existence came into focus. I could teach a lot from that standpoint.

Since you're going to be attending both rallies, simply raise the Colbert signs at the Stewart rally, and the Stewart signs at the Colbert rally. Saves on carrying things.

Other than that, try "Where are the advertisements?" or "And who are your sponsors?". Or "Stewart is a capitalist puppet of Viacom" and them simply cross out Stewart an write in Colbert- that way you only have to carry one sign, and no one gets upset, as both Stewart and Cobert want to earn more money. Or "Viacom Puppet", or "Corporate Shill".

Or "Make Me A Promise".

Or perhaps "Where are the Other Ones?" and simply replace with any band of your choice - like "Where are the Beach Boys?". Me, I'd like Rotoglow to play. So, my sign would read, "Where is Rotoglow?", and yours should too. But that's just my opinion.

Or perhaps, "Where are the naked dancing girls you promised us?"

Or "Stay away from the Brown Acid". Or perhaps something with an artwork of your choice.

Or "Where are the hotdogs? or "Where are the bathrooms?" or "Spare Change? or "Will work for sex"

Book your reservation early for the Hard Rock cafe, and remember that many good bars are within easy walking distance. It is Washington, DC, after all.

"Stewart is a capitalist puppet of Viacom" this one is fantastic and the whole crossing out their names thing is funny as hell.

I find it funny that Jon Stewart just released a new book as well, less than a week after he announced the rally.

If you stay on the Colbert side, you could carry a sign that says you're one of his Platinum viewers —problem is, you would need to hire two hot escort girls to carry it for you, and attend wearing a silk bed robe.

If you stay on the Stewart side, carry a sign that says you're there to represent Nambla —if you dare! :)

Haha Nambla... I'm starting to think the best approach to this rally is trying to be the biggest smart-ass I can possibly be. Oh and I do dare...oh I do. But I'll need two ladies carrying the Nambla sign instead. I think Enigmni Freak would volunteer to be one XD

I personally like the idea of a rally that pokes fun at the political establishment... but towards BOTH sides of the red/blue war. We have become comfortably divided by people who are comfortable with our division. This should be recognized and denied... before both sides lose everything.

But... is that the way it will happen?

It's comical, in a way, that people smart enough to admit that we are not smart enough to know everything, should somehow follow a political movement that calls them to draw pointless lines in the sand on behalf of politicians who know even less. It is a paradise for the narrow minded, where the danger of clear sight is fogged by contrived conflicts and hatreds that play us as pawns against the rook of an obtuse fate.

*sigh* This thread has made me feel both really old and little young again.

Back in the 70's I used to see this sticker on the bumpers of big rigs going down the highway that read "Ban My Hell." This must have been a sticker available in truck stops because I would see it a lot for about a year or so as I recall.

I always thought that was food for thought. It was probably the average conservative's reactionary backlash to all the things being "banned" back in the 60's and 70's and the general sense of nothing being allowed anymore, but it is just ambiguous and ironic enough and cryptic enough to be Colbertian.
It can have multiple meanings.

It can mean to say something like "Ban, My Ass" as if to imply that everything is being banned to a ridiculous extent or even a "hellish" extent.

It can also look like the complaint of some poor trucker stuck forever in his lonely truck cab watching the miles fly past hellishly and wanting out of that hell. So it is like saying in effect, "You want to ban something then ban this lousy job I am stuck in."

It could also be a sort of metaphysical/philosophical statement that implies the chap in the truck is a "thinker" and not just some dumb trucker.

It seems open to other meanings as well. Perhaps some of the contestants here can come up with others, but I would love to see this written on a placard or a tee shirt sported at a rally - especially a Colbertian rally. It would cause squints and pauses I think.

That is most definitely ambiguous. With all these amazing ideas I might have to make a collage of sorts as my sign, maybe like sectioned off areas or a collaboration between front and back.

Not that one is, but that whereby Is, is. I have used this with my university students and it usually blows their minds. They cannot focus upon what it truly means but they know it means something because it is frustrating to their intellect.

By the by, I coined it so you have my permission.

So now when I see someone walking in the crowds with that sign I'll know it's you, since your going there anyways XD I do like that saying though.

Consider it, it, whereby considering it is it.

edit: hmm... Consider it, whereby considering it is it...that's better.

I was hoping to attract some attention with the sign I was going to make. It was going to be like a collage of all the ideas from this thread. But it's surprising how much can happen in a month :D
