Salve!

Lately I have returned to Venice, maybe the most beautiful and amazing town of the world.
This blog includes some legends with photos and very short video that I have made walking across the town or visiting the Biennale, also some links of just some of other my favourite artists of this Biennale.

Project devised by Costa Rican sculptor Jiménez Deredia involving the installation of nine major groups of sculpture in nine countries on the American continent, stretching from Canada to Tierra del Fuego via the United States, Mexico, Yucatan, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru and Chile - an ideal thread stretching across the Americas, linking peoples and legends, myths and traditions, lives and symbols. the artist has created a path signposted by monumental sculptural complexes conceived as spaces for meditation. The idea for the project was spawned by the pre-Colombian stone spheres built by the ancient Boruca Indians in Costa Rica approximately 2000 years ago.
The symbology enshrined in the sphere describes the transmutation of matter, while the circle is a being seeking his true self. These elements point to a unitary and global view of existence and of the universe, harking back to the ancestral values that are a deeply rooted in every man. What Deredia has done is to analyze and reinterpret a symbol that predominates in many ancient pre-Colombian cultures, forging a link between the spherical elements of each of the nine sculpture groups and the main constellations in the countries involved by aligning the spheres with the stars.
In order to understand the origins of the project, it is necessary to go back to 1963. Deredia was nine years old when he saw a group of pre-Columbian spheres for the first time in the National Museum of San José, capital of Costa Rica: stone artefacts built by the ancient Boruca Indians about two thousand years ago. Since that moment, he has never stopped asking himself why they were created. Struck deeply by the symbolic value of those mysterious objects, the artist began to study the use and significance given, by other populations of that land, to the spherical element and theme of circularity: a recurrent use of symbology between distant populations even as much as thousands of kilometres apart. From his interest and study, the idea was born of revivifying an ancient symbol shared by millions of women and men over the course of history. The nine structures in the project are characterised by the revival of elements peculiar to various civilisations and of marble spheres aligned with the constellations of each country which in turn host its own monument. In such a way a harmonic whole is created of sites where each single element can emanate the strength and value of the whole.

Lungo le Americhe si snoderà un ideale filo rosso, legame di popoli e leggende, miti e tradizioni, vita e simboli, l'artista crea un percorso segnato da monumentali complessi scultorei concepiti come spazi di meditazione. Il progetto trae origine dalle sfere precolombiane in pietra, costruite dagli antichi indiani Boruca nel Costa Rica circa 2000 anni fa.
La simbologia legata alla sfera descrive la trasmutazione della materia, e il cerchio l'essere alla ricerca di se stesso. Questi elementi indicano una concezione unitaria e globale dell'esistenza e dell'universo, e si richiamano a valori ancestrali insiti in ogni uomo.
Deredia ha analizzato e reinterpretato un simbolo predominante in molte antiche culture precolombiane, creando una connessione tra gli elementi sferici di ognuno dei nove complessi scultorei e le principali costellazioni dei Paesi interessati, anche attraverso l'allineamento delle sfere con le stelle. Per comprendere le origini del progetto, occorre risalire al 1963. Deredia ha nove anni, quando per la prima volta vede, nel Museo Nazionale di San José, la capitale del Costa Rica, un gruppo di sfere precolombiane: manufatti in pietra costruiti circa duemila anni fa dagli antichi indiani Boruca. Da quel momento, non smette di domandarsi il perché della loro creazione. Profondamente colpito dal valore simbolico di quegli oggetti misteriosi, l'artista inizia a studiare l'uso e il significato attribuito da altri popoli della terra all'elemento sferico e al tema della circolarità, simbologia ricorrente in popolazioni distanti anche migliaia di chilometri tra loro. Da questo interesse e da questo studio, nasce l'idea di rivivificare un simbolo antico, condiviso da milioni di donne e uomini nel corso della storia. Le nove strutture del progetto sono caratterizzate dalla rivisitazione di elementi peculiari di diverse civiltà e da sfere in marmo allineate con le costellazioni dei paesi di volta in volta protagonisti del monumento, così da creare un insieme armonico di luoghi in cui ogni singolo elemento possa emanare la forza ed il valore dell'insieme.

When the young Bacchus landed in Puglia, he found stony fields with a lean vegetation.
«What bad land!» he cried «But» he said surprised «here there is a small green branch at least! It must be strong if it is still green in this inhospitable land, I will save it»
So he planted the branch and gone to search water…but when he came back, the impetuous wind of this land without trees, had already uprooted the branch dragging it away.
So he searched a support, but there was just stones...
Between the stones he saw animals bones, he selected 3 as support for the branch:
1 bone of lion, 1 of monkey, 1 of pig.
Bacchus resumed his travel around the World.
The small branch grew and gave beautiful clusters, the men when pressed the grapes and tasted the wine noticed that the plant had absorbed the traits of the 3 bones used as support:
the first cup made brave like the lion, the second cup made amusing like the monkeys ,
but the third made alike to pig.
So the people of Puglia explains to the stranger the trait and danger of their strong wines.

Quando il giovane dio Bacco approdò in Puglia, trovò campi sassosi con una vegetazione scarsa. «Che brutta terra!» esclamò «Ma» esclamò poi meravigliato «qui almeno c'è un ramoscello ancora verde! Deve essere forte se è ancora verde in questa terra inospitale, lo salverò»
Così lo piantò il ramo and andò a cercare acqua per innaffiarlo…ma quando tornò, il vento impetuoso in questa zona senz' alberi aveva già sradicato il ramoscello trascinandolo via.
Cercò un sostegno, ma c’erano solo sassi...
Tra le pietre vide ossa di animali, selezionò 3 come sostegno alla piantina:
1 osso di leone, 1 scimmia, 1 di maiale.
Bacco riprese il viaggio per il mondo.
Il ramoscello crebbe e diede bellissimi grappoli, gli uomini quando spremettero l'uva e assaggiarono il vino che ottennero notarono che la pianta aveva assorbito le caratteristiche dei 3 ossi usati come sostegno: la prima coppa rendeva coraggiosi come il leone, la seconda gai e divertenti come le scimmie, ma la terza somiglianti al maiale.
Così i Pugliesi spiegano ai forestieri le caratteristiche e i pericoli dei loro fortissimi vini.

One beach of Vieste is Pizzomunno.
The name of this beach is connected to the great white monolith.
The legend of Pizzomunno narrates the love story between: Pizzomunno and Cristalda.
Pizzomunno every days started every day from this beach with his boat.
When he was out to the sea charming sirens adored him trying to seduce him by their voices, but he was so loyal to Cristalda that always refused to become their lover.
The sirens, jealouse and offended, decided to punish Pizzomunno dragin down Cristalda
in deep sea.
Pizzomunno petrified by the pain saw his body changing in the monolith that today the tourists of Vieste can see from the little beach with his name.
The legend wants that Pizzomunno and Cristalda continues to meet each other every 100 years to live again their passion in 1 night.

Una delle spiagge Vieste è Pizzomunno.
Il nome di questa spiaggia è legato all’imponente monolite bianco.
La leggenda di Pizzomunno narra la storia d’amore tra: Pizzomunno e Cristalda.
Pizzomunno tutti i giorni partiva da questa spiaggia con la sua barca.
Quando era al largo sirene fascinose lo adoravano provando a con i loro canti,
ma lui era così fedele a Cristalda, che rifiutò sempre di diventare loro amante.
Le sirene, gelose ed offese, decisero di punire Pizzomunno trascinando Cristalda in fondo al mare.
Pizzomunno pietrificato dal dolore vide il suo corpo trasformarsi nel monolite che oggi i turisti di Vieste possono ammirare dalla piccola spiaggia con il suo nome.
La leggenda vuole che Pizzomunno e Cristalda continuino ad incontrarsi ogni 100 anni per rivivere la loro passione in 1 notte.
