Nosso Lar: Blockbuster Spiritist Movie from Brazil

We’ve recently discussed Clint Eastwood’s upcoming movie that deals with NDEs and mediumpship. A promising movie but an exceptional director, for sure

But hey: this is 2010, when the US no longer has a monopoly on cinema; and from the land of Samba comes yet another film that seems to boldly go where the Gran Torino dared not to!

Nosso Lar (Our Home), a Brazilian film inspired by the the most popular book of spiritist medium Chico Xavier —a very prominent figure in the Brazilian spiritual movement, who penned dozens of books using the process known as psychography— has already broken all the box office records in the Brazilian theaters, and in just one weekend it has already been viewed by over 2 million spectators.

Nosso Lar is the first spiritual drama to be developed in Brazil but the third to go on release after Bezerra de Menezes througth Fox Brazil and Chico Xavier through Downtown-Sony in April this year.

Nosso Lar tells the story of a 1930’s era physician called André Luiz. When he dies, André arrives to another dimension and is forced to redeem his earthly mistakes in a sort of “purgatory”, before being accepted in an idyllic spirit colony —the beauty of Rio de Janeiro & the futuristic architectural features of Brasilia served to create the stunning backgrounds of the main character’s life on the other side.

Here’s the trailer:

[EDIT: A new member of TDG who lives in Brazil has been kind enough to send us the link to Nosso Lar’s English webpage]

The film’s ground-breaking success, with musical tracks by Philip Glass, has already obtained most of the voting by Brazil’s Ministery of Culture to; with the voting, Nosso Lar will go and represent Brazil in this year’s competition for Best Foreign Movie at the Oscar awards ceremony —which will surely ensure its global distribution.

Who knows? Maybe the reason films like these are coming from South America instead of the US, it’s because *they* don’t fear the wrath of a Randy or a Richard Dawkins 😉

Whatever the case, I’m sure looking forward to seeing this one. How about you?

  1. Spirits on the Silver Screen
Wow, what a production! Looks like a very moving piece of film… and yes indeed, I am familiar with Chico Xavier. It seems that Xavier’s story is very interesting, in that he became such a prolific writer, but (if I remember correctly) kept very little or no money from having published so many of his books, claiming that it was unfair to accept such money if, in fact, spirits he channeled had been the true “authors.”

    1. I like that movie!
Yes, it has something of it in it, visually speaking. However, “Defending” was about progressing in the consciousness ladder, and returning to Earth was considered a punishment… or at least a show of failure. The movie didn’t address the possibility of the dead interacting with the living.

But it’s a damn good movie nonetheless. If you haven’t seen it, make it part of your Netflix list ASAP! 🙂

      1. Interaction
Therefor it’s not specifically about communication, the movie yes address the interaction between the living and the so called dead. There’s a scene were people send messages to their relatives, also André Luis, the main character visits his family where he’s seen by his old nanny, when leaving the house.
For those who want to read the book that originated the movie, it’s available for free download on this link for free.

        1. Thanks
Thanks. I usually like to read the book before seeing the movie, just to see if the director’s imagination can outmatch mine.

I’m not sure if I want to do it this time, though; but I’m also not sure when this movie will be released in Mexico —hopefully before the year ends!

  2. from the Volley-for-Love-Dept.
Could this be another sally against the Apocalypse of the Imagination?

Could it be a movie that eschews the easy ironic statements, the use of violence the elevation of pessimism as being more real than the deep, ordinary, beautiful and miraculous humanity that we experience all the time?

    If so, then awe-some.

Here is to the rising of spirituality (meaning)!

      1. Be patient
I’m sure that Grailers, above-average smart that they are, would be able to make sense of the trailer, armed with the little synopsis I included above it 😉

And yes, I’m confident that later Twentieth Century Fox will make sure its released with the proper subtitles —no voice-overs! they are an abomination 😛

PS: Since Spanish and Portuguese are not that different —and with a little help of Google Translate— I include below a loose translation of the first texts that appear in the trailer:

There is a place that many imagine…

        Some talk about it…

And yet everyone will get to know someday…

        When it was his turn…*

        His story was just beginning.

*I’m not so sure about this line

        1. still
still a damn good trailer though, and i don’t care whether or not i see it in english or whatever, i want to see it. i’ve watched the german version of Faust from like the 1920s(?)and it was a silent one.

  3. Help from Brazil
    hello people!
I’m from Brazil and let me show you the Nosso Lar’s website in English! Maybe it can help you… 😉

PS: I’ve seen the movie and it is the most expensive ever made here in Brazil! And the implicit message is the true atractive of the movie! It’s very beautiful and the people cried out in the theatre…

    God bless you all

    Márcio

    1. Gracias y Bienvenido!
      Thank you Márcio!!

I’ll update the article with your link ASAP.

And welcome to the Grail. I’m always happy to see newcomers from Latin/South America 🙂

  4. Life beyond what you can see…
A very well-done movie that show us a little beat of what a lot of people don’t know yet , don’t believe or don’t have information enough. We are talking about what happen after death. Rich in details, “Nosso Lar” show us that the spiritual life is much, much more than just “ghosts” hunting houses or lost in cemeteries; it’s beyond the idea that after death, the spirit stay scaring people or causing poltergeist phenomenon and other superficial thoughts like those.
Yes, in the life after death, when the person reaches the Spiritual Plan, we find houses, Nature, people working hard and receiving benefits for their works and for the result of their jobs. We find relatives living together, we find technology, government, administration. We find schools, communities, people teaching and people learning…Teachers and students. All descriptions based in a truthful psychography sent directly from Andre Luiz to Chico Xavier, the most worldwide famous and known medium of all time.

      Question:

Do we also find (gulp!) taxes? 😉

I kid, I kid. I still think it’s very interesting how successfully this movie has become, and I’m intrigued to see it. As to the validity of the claims and information “channeled” by Xavier, well… we’ll just have to wait and find out, won’ we?

    1. Hi Edna
This movie is getting so much attention that there’s a good chance it will receive a world-wide distribution, even in this depressed state of the movie industry, when high execs don’t want to bet on foreign-speaking films —Wot? Americans don’t learn how to read during Grade School? 😛

I’ll try to find out about international releases —maybe even contact the producers. Please stay tuned 🙂

  5. Interesting Movie!
    Red pill,

I’ll go to see this movie when it comes to Japan. I’m looking forward to seeing it! In the past 15 years or so I’ve see only one movie, “Avatar”; because, movies usually don’t interest me! But, this movie does.

    Thank-you for your post!

  6. Andre Luiz was a Doctor
Just correcting the article, Andre Luiz was a MD when Alive, and the movie its a collection with a lot of other continuations. It is called the “The life in the spiritual world” Chico Xavier was the greatest medium of all time, with 457 books published, it’s also the most read autor in latin america. He, during his life, gave all the rights from the books to charity, and was elected as the BRAZILIAN OF THE CENTURY; He is a great prove of love and hope to many suffering people here. It has also 2 movies treating of his life. “Chico Xavier” and “The mothers of Chico Xavier”, the first one tells his life story and the second shows some real cases where he helped to bring letters of dead sons to their parents. Once he has sent a letter which one was accepted by a criminal court as prove that inocented a young man from murder charging. It was considered “the first time ever that the “dead” inocents his murder. In the letter he said that the case was an accident and not a premedited kill. People should study him more, and send his messenger around the world.
