Where the hell is Doc Brown when we need him??

Quote of the Day:

“And God said unto Noah, ‘Go forth and procureth a scissor lift, a pneumatic impact wrench and a shit-ton of polyurethane. Oh, and worry not about the specifics of hull displacement for the arbitrary load you’ll be carrying.”

˜Rantings of a Ranga’s response to Creationist Ken Ham.

  1. NDE ‘explanation’
Did anyone check out the NDE link? All the so called ‘explanations’ aren’t taken seriously by any leading researchers in the field. I think even the leading Ketamine researcher either rejected the comparison or took a non reductionist view of ketamine.

  2. Subscribed Links
Please stop posting news headlines that require the reader to either subscribe or pay to read the story (unless that’s how you are making some money, then maybe just indicate it’s a paid link).

    1. New links for darkrats
I’m guessing you had a problem with the New York Times article about a textalyzer, and with the Wall St. Journal article about the human brain.

Hopefully the new links I just inserted in today’s news will work better for you. The alternate textalyzer link goes to boston.com for the same article. And… well let’s just say, if all of the Wall St Journal article now appears for you, it might be best to immediately save it and/or read it all before clicking to another page.

  3. Noah Knows Rio
There might be some hope for the replica Ark if it could be turned into a floating favela? String up some Carnival lights and everything.

The “Word Cloud” article would have been nice for sure. When I was younger and learned a new work, I always came across that same word almost immediately in “real life”. I’m sure there’s a word for that too.

RPJ, I’m surprised you missed this article (tisk, tisk, haha) –

      1. Retirement Party?
Only joking, of course. “Beggars can’t be choosy,” as they say.

That said, I’m a proponent of retiring at the top of one’s game.

I’m also a proponent of doing what you want whether anybody appreciates it or not. I think that’s what I identify with most about TDG. Popularity is over-rated!

  4. Vaping
Electronic cigarettes helped a friend of mine quit. The problem is that kids are starting to vape because it’s marketed as cool. It’s still tobacco and it’s still an addiction. As someone who grew up in a family of smokers who were also medical professionals, I highly recommend these doctors reconsider endorsing a tobacco product. I have seen people try to quit smoking and fail no matter what method they use (vaping, medication, rehab, patches, etc.). If they are in a weak mental state nothing will help them. When my brother, a paranoid schizophrenic, tried to quit using patches, he nearly gave himself a heart attack because he kept smoking while wearing the patches. He just couldn’t get enough nicotine. His teeth are rotting out of his head and he isn’t even 50 yet. So I’ve seen things that would make these doctors reconsider. While I understand they want to approve vaping to help quit, it may be just as bad as smoking.

    1. Vaping vs smoking
Regular cigarettes shut down 53 immune system genes.
E-cigs shut down 358 immune system genes.

… The data, while preliminary, suggests that immune cells in e-cig users may be unable to prevent bacterial breaches, thus opening the gates to infection.

The researchers also looked at the gene-altering effects of different flavors of e-cigarettes on the cells in the delicate lining of the respiratory tract. The flavorings that seemed to have the most potent gene-altering effects were additives that taste like cinnamon—cinnamaldehyde—as well as butter flavors.

These flavorings are considered safe, Jaspers pointed out—but only for eating. The additives are categorized as generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for food and beverages, but they have never been tested for safety when inhaled, she adds. The point is driven home with one of the flavors, the butter-mimicking diacetyl. This flavor has been found in some e-cig flavorings, but it’s known to cause bronchiolitis obliterans, a severe disease caused by scar tissue and inflammation built up deep in the lungs. The link was discovered years ago in food manufacturing, particularly microwave popcorn factory employees who developed “popcorn worker’s lung.”

A concerning factor in e-cig use is that it’s not well known what or how much flavor additives and components are in e-cigarette liquid, Jaspers said. …
