Have joy.

Quote of the Day

  1. bag of air
Yeah but look at the feedback. All but one is under 100. These are kids bidding for the soul purpose of trolling. Once it ends, assuming eBay doesn’t take it off now it’s known, I seriously doubt he will get paid for it. I think eBay allows sellers now to restrict the amount of feedback points you can have to bid on an item. He should have restricted it so anyone under 1000 is automatically deleted from bidding. If this seller is serious, he should know what’s coming.

  2. 25 History events – query
One of the ‘bogus’ events listed concerns Christians being killed in Rome’s Colosseum, stating that Romans were Christian rather than heathen by the time it was built. Wrong! The Colosseum was opened in AD 82, with Romans not converting to Christianity until AD300 onwards.

And Gerbils spreading the Black Death? And peasants taking hot baths in the middle ages? I know that Queen Elizabeth the 1st famously said that “she took a bath once a month, whether she needed one or not” but as for commoners, no way!

Think someone needs to research their facts and check their sources a bit better.

  3. 25 Bogus Things?
It’s not my intent to step on toes, and I understand the affinity DG has for Cracked, but I don’t applaud it. The reason is entries like the execrable and amateurish 25 Bogus Things. It is chock full of huge errors itself, relying chiefly on the silly pseudo-factual alt-history which has littered the internet for 20 years. It’s an awkward choice for anyone the least interested in basic historical literacy and factual accuracy.

Look, if adolescent snark is your target, knock yourselves out with Cracked. But I’d be sort of embarrassed to link to a post which is full of such monumental errors.

    1. Afinity for Cracked
Ok, firstly I apologize for the late reply. Lot of things happening lately, so I don’t have as much time as I used to in order to engage with comments.

Secondly, I can understand why Cracked would not be everyone’s cup of tea. I kinda like their irreverent tone, personally, and I even admit to ‘copying’ it from time to time in my own writing, if nothing else to make my articles more approachable –otherwise I’d still be stuck with the oh-so formal style denoting English is NOT my native language 😉

So yes, that article about the 25 historical ‘facts’ was not really A-class material –1 bad apple among 16 other links to chose from on my Thursday news briefs. But COME ON! It’s not like I *ALWAYS* post Cracked links every. Single. Week!!

Thusly, I apologize (again) but also would like to point out that if you guys want to see the quality of the links we provide at The Grail improved, the best way to do so is by SUGGESTING links thru the contact address.

Otherwise, you’ll be forced to suffer the stuff I try to gather after midnight, when my standards are as low as my sobriety 😉

      Sincerely,

      RPJ

      1. cracked we are

So yes, that article about the 25 historical ‘facts’ was not really A-class material –1 bad apple among 16 other links to chose from on my Thursday news briefs.

When I read the 25-facts, I wasn’t expectingly scholarship in an article that used about 100 phrases to correct 25 ‘facts’, but i did expect – and got – a lively discussion session 200+ comments long, so I found plenty of entertainment there.

No news editor has the kind of free time it takes to read deeply enough into every article to never make a mistake. Frankly, my mistakes were usually in the other direction: posting articles that were long and technical, which few people read all the way to the good stuff in the center.

Thanks, RPJ. I always enjoy the biggest part of your news, and i’m trying to regenerate my sense of humor so I’ll love the other 2 percent too. 😛
