Keep calm and Grail on.

Quote of the Day:

“In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.”

~Nietzsche

  1. Not Your Grandpa’s LSD
    What a load of shite.

Badly written, inaccurate on several levels, like Sasha was dead 4 months before this conference.

Blaming Leary again for a complex situation that he nor anyone else had control over.

    1. Inaccurate
In which part do you think the article was inaccurate?

I don’t blame Leary (entirely) for the downfall of the 60’s counter-culture movement –and neither does the article IMO, though perhaps there was a bit of the ole Harvard vs Yale rivalry sipping through 😉

Like McKenna, I think Leary was too hasty in rejecting Western science entirely, thinking it had nothing to offer when interpreting the effects and outcomes produced by these substances. At the same time, there were other things to consider –Vietnam, the Cold War, etc.

I guess the major blunder of the Hippie movement was not taking into consideration their own ‘shadow’ (from the Jungian POV). Not doing so only caused their demons to become more powerful, and they ended up consuming them.

        1. Hippie Dippie
Well, for one thing, Nixon launched the whole War on Drugs.

Then there’s the fact that Woodstock happened only once* 😉

And finally, just how many neighbors called ‘Sun-beam’ do you have? 😛

          (*):’94 and ’99 don’t count!

  2. $755 condoms
Well if they didn’t practice safe sex before they sure as hell won’t now. Although I’m sure this isn’t the only [common] household item that’s price has been driven up and given the crime rate in Venezuela, they have worse problems.

      1. I live in a University town –
I live in a University town – perhaps that biases me – but the Hippy ethic and style feel very much alive to me. TDG itself is a testament to the “alternative” mindset that is the Hippy Hallmark. Pure hippiness was never expected to last long, but the various blends have persisted and became part of the modern fabric. The idea that “love is everything” gets mentioned every time the subject of NDE’s comes up.
There were and there still are “Woodstocks” – they are called Grateful Dead Concerts, etc – and there were many other huge rock concerts full of long hairs though they happened in stadiums. Tom Petty has run long and hard the past 40 years without let up. I just don’t see it – the hippies never went away.
Down here in the South one still hears the country folk complaining about the damn hippies.

        1. The hippies never went away
I guess if you see it that way –the counterculture movement leaving some remnants in our society after the ‘Hippie bubble’ burst– then it’s as valid to say “the Hippies never went away” as it is to say “the Gnostics never went away,” or “the Templars never went away.”

But as a visible, acknowledged, present movement, the Hippie movement died when Charles Manson and his ‘family’ were apprehended.
