“Every now and then a man’s mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation…”

Quote of the Day:

“…and never shrinks back to its former dimensions.”

A post about misidentification of celestial objects, accompanied by a photo of Kenneth Arnold –because those Chevron-shaped objects skipping around Mount Rainier were *obviously* reflections of Sirius in the atmosphere! (-___-)

  1. Sean Carroll And The Unknown Unknown
Reading the NYT op ed by Sean Carroll, making confident comments about cosmology, I have to report the one and only time he deigned to respond to me, and, as I recall, it took me 17 days of asking him if there was a single object in the universe that physics knew exhaustively and comprehensively. And it did take me that long to get his answer, which was, of course, “No”. Since the topic was, in part, the expectations of physics and cosmology having a “Theory of Everything” he certainly didn’t want to admit that they didn’t have anything like a Theory of Everythingn about One Thing. If they don’t have Theory of Everything about One Thing, the idea they will have one of the entire universe would seem to be rather preposterous.

One of the things about not knowing everything about one thing is that you don’t know 1. what it is you don’t know, 2. how much you don’t know.

I have a very strong feeling that in 30 or 40 years, the present models of the universe will look naive and quaint. People like Carroll will arrogantly be asserting that they’re just about to crack the problem once and for all – and, shockingly, it will support their ideological preferences – and media companies like the NYT will be sucking it up, then, too.
