Whew! Done…

Quote of the Day:

If we believe that humanity may transcend tooth and claw, if we believe divers races & creeds can share this world as peaceably as the orphans share their candlenut tree, if we believe leaders must be just, violence muzzled, power accountable & the riches of the Earth & its Oceans shared equitably, such a world will come to pass.

Author David Mitchell, in Cloud Atlas.

  1. Teleportation & Compression
I wonder if these students considered the possibility that maybe future teleportation technologies would make use of compression algorithms in order to reduce the amount of data you needed to upload a human being. The same way a JPEG file delivers a set of instructions to your computer in order to reproduce an image on your screen –instead of sending the raw pixel data, the JPEG format makes an average guess of how many pixels have the same color & in what order; the bigger the compression, the less accurate the file will be.

The idea was actually proposed by Michael Crichton in his time-traveling novel Timeline. And even though I’m sure such a concept would not sit well with those who consider themselves to be ‘unique’ individuals, when you really get down to it, the amount of information that differentiates you from any random stranger walking down the street is rather small.

If only. The students typify much of the current scientific establishment. It is composed of many pedestrian thinkers, well able to get a degree but having little to offer in the way of insight, vision, innovativeness or much of the maverick push-past-the-accepted-boundaries mindset of any of the greats. In fact, one can pretty much say that – with rare exceptions – whatever is reported in the mainstream News as science will be pedantic.

  2. what “meaning”?
Just wonder if contributing to a rotten society and being part of it makes healthy. It likely does.
I can see it where I live (Norway). And to some extend, yes, it makes me sick feeling so excluded. Initially, before knowing how inhumane this society is, I did try to contribute, but never was allowed to (I am a non-Norwegian, we are all treated like slaves here).
In the Third Reich maybe many who contributed felt meaningful.
I think this kind of meaning is for those who are not psychopaths and, hence, do not rule, but must integrate and function.

  3. 60 ft long animal
Do not swim inside a pyrosome. While they are said to be quite soft, K Gowlett-Holmes reports finding a 2 meter (~ 6.5 ft long) pyrosome with a dead penguin trapped inside. K Gowlett-Holmes writes in a comment below: “The penguin had obviously swum in the open end of the tube then couldn’t turn – it was jammed in the apex of the pyrosome and its beak was just poking through the colony matrix. Even fairy penguins are quite strong – the fact it could not break free shows just how tough some pyrosomes are”.
O_O
The fun upbeat music in that video didn’t prepare me for this…
