News Briefs 25-03-2013

What was I thinkin'? I knew there'd be hell to pay, but that crossed my mind a little too late.

Quote of the Day:

Can you imagine if we had restrictions of speech, or the surveillance state, 400 years ago? We wouldn't have had the Reformation, or the Enlightenment, or the scientific revolution. Those would have been stopped – and we're having other kinds of revolutions now.

Amir Taaki, Bitcoin developer and activist.

I don't disagree with the need for revolution, but this quote of the day is ridiculous. There was no restrictions on speach or state surveillance 400 years ago? So, in the 17th century, when the Inquisition was extant and Galileo was imprisoned as a heretic for speaking a scientific truth that was already widely accepted? Dude may have a good grasp of technology, but a historian he is not. I would argue that the revolutions Mr Taaki cites are thought of as grand events specifically because they fought and overcame the oppressive state apparati that existed just as tenaciously then as they do now.

:P

It's a shame when a government is killing it's own people. It's a damn shame when the type of government the people have affords them no easy way out. And it's a bastard who is responsible for the inevitable, bloody, and outright horrifying end to it all that they are to full of themselves to see. In other words, China would be better off if it where run by a literal pack of monkeys...even they wouldn't kill the tigers...

Try typing "Life expectancy, China" into Google. Then tell me about the terrible things that the Chinese government are doing.

Still, you probably shouldn't let boring facts get in the way of your oh-so-caring-sharing sensibilities.

*chuckle* can't wait till a Greenpeace-Earthfirst-Plant-Rights-Group comes to the fore, smashing their boats into vegan restaurants and picketing orchards with 'eating fruit is murder' very graphic signs :3
