Clearly the man wasn't thinking of the all the potential revenues from walking sticks and trained guide dogs. How selfish.

You're not seeing the big potential here: the market for eye-poking sticks! We need to set up an R&D department stat, and start developing tools to make eye-poking weapons as efficient and ruthless as possible - we'll sell them by the bucketload!
Kind regards,
Greg

I support this initiative whole-heartedly.
If we do it now, it might eventually refrain our future synthetic overlords from calling us 'meatbags' ;)

♫ We'll make great pets ♫. C'mon Miguel, sing it with me!
This makes sense to me:
“Again the word ‘owners’, whilst technically correct in law, harks back to a previous age when animals were regarded as just that: property, machines or things to use without moral constraint.”
"Previous age"? It's how people perceive animals today!
We're not apart from the animal kingdom; we're a part of it. I have more to say, but I need to clean a kitty litter box. Cats don't have owners, they have staff!
