THE END IS COMING! The End… of the week, thank God πŸ˜‰

Gracias Rick

Quote of the Day:

β€œWhen he awoke, the dinosaur was still there.” (*)

Augusto Monterroso Bonilla (1921-2003), guatemalan writer.

(*): Actually, this is not exactly a quote, but the world’s shortest story.

  1. The End
Sheesh Red, you gave me a fright! Even more frightening, Australia gets to see the End before you guys thanks to Greenwich.

The Black Sheep and Other Fables by Bonilla sounds intriguing. Carlos Fuentos said of it:

“Imagine Borges’ fantastical bestiary having tea with Alice. Imagine Jonathan Swift and James Thurber exchanging notes. Imagine a frog from Calaveras County who has seriously read Mark Twain. Meet Monterroso.”

Wish me luck finding a copy!

    1. We should do a contest!
We should do a contest here among the Grailers, to come up with a super-short story like Monterroso’s. It would need to have a topic according to the subjects discussed here at the Grail. The best story could win a copy of Darklore or something β€”How about it, Greg? πŸ˜‰

  2. Goliath Sniper Rifle
The reporter obviously is not a target rifle shooter – 700 yds is nothing special for a standard 7.62 target rifle with open sights. 900 yds starts to get a little tricky, with 1200 yards being deem ‘demanding’. With the Goliath he could hardly miss.

A .50 calibre bullet with a decent cartridge behind it, and a telescopic sight is simply ‘easy peasy’ at 700 yds. But then again I did note in the report that despite the opening claims for the weapon, windage does have to be taken into account.

But to conclude, I just wish I could own one here in the UK, and that the NRA at Bisley would let me use it in their competions!

    1. Shooting in the desert
      Hi Nostra,

There is a range, now named after Ben Avery, where these guys were probably shooting that first opened up in the early ’60s. I shot there many times back in the early days. I think it has a 1000 yd. limit, so I’m guessing that the coach was giving the author an ‘easy’ try. Back in the day, we would have gone anywhere out in the desert and busted rocks, but it has built up so much now and there are so many people buzzing around on dirt bikes and ATVs that it isn’t safe to do that any more.

Speaking of shooting the .50s alongside others, I’m told that the shock wave will pop the reticles out of the adjacent scopes! Not very neighborly of them.

BTW, I’m going to be in Birmingham and Sheffield this coming week. If you are in the area, can I buy you a pint?

      Cheers,
