News Briefs 15-05-2007

I just found out, new power adapters for four-year-old monitors can be hard to come by.

  • An almost perfect 29m-year-old fossilised skull from one of humankind’s earliest ancestors has been unearthed in Egypt.
  • From the ‘news you couldn’t make up’ department: To keep back-from-the-dead ectoplasmic soldiers from giving away D-Day secrets, British intelligence agents, including Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, jailed a famous spiritualist for contravening the Witchcraft Act of 1735.
  • Digital tricks preserve thousands of dinosaur tracks.
  • Will an impending magnetic pole reversal spell danger for the Earth? An article from The Economist no less.
  • ESA’s Cluster was in the right place and time to make a shocking discovery. The four spacecraft encountered a shock wave that kept breaking and reforming – predicted only in theory.
  • Mexican sinkhole may lead NASA to Jupiter.
  • Changes in deep ocean circulation triggered the two enormous ‘burps’ of carbon dioxide released from the depths of the ocean around Antarctica at the end of the last Ice Age.
  • ‘My stroke left with me a foreign accent‘.
  • Pwnage news: Google has drawn up plans to compile psychological profiles of millions of web users by covertly monitoring the way they play online games.
  • Google study finds one in 10 web pages searched contains malicious code. No surprise to most of us.
  • Spreading viruses as we breathe.
  • Researcher says some children demonstrate unusual abilities after UFO and Extraterrestrial Encounters.
  • Robbie Williams talks to dead people.
  • Mike Oldfield talks about his slow, painful recovery from the mental health problems that underlay his 40-year musical career – and about his autobiography, Changeling.
  • Depleted uranium weapons linked to lung cancer in new study.
  • Human enhancement: right or wrong?
  • Doom creator John Carmack’s Armadillo Aerospace is on track to win the 2007 Lunar Lander Challenge (with video link to test flight).
  • Almost 30 years ago, NASA sent a gold record to the aliens. More pertinently though, were some of the strange images within due to Carl Sagan’s predilection for a toke or three?

Thanks, Greg.

  1. Glad your back Kat!
Good news items and so sorry to hear about your pc woes. It’s great to have you posting our news again. Love, Pam

    —————————–Truth is stranger than fiction.

  2. Hey Kat!
We missed you and Greg was saying you had been taken by the black ops people.
I was very worried until you said it was your computer giving you trouble.

That ‘foreign accent after stroke’ thing is strange.I’ve heard about it before and can’t for the life of me work out how it happens.
I can imagine that you would have trouble with language, I have seen the same problem here with the old darling, but to actually take on another accent is really odd.
But then we know very little about the brain.

  3. do youz guyz have the ability to find stuff like google can?
I had to re-format my Primitive Container I use for my skype calls. Everything I had on the hard drive was erased. I thought if I save even one contaminated file it would cause the same problems again. What was mysterious is a 2.6gig Intel Pentium 4 processor was slower than my old RISC processor 6500 Mac.

I didn’t re-format, re-install when I tossed out tons of my kids accumulated stuff. After my experience of abrupt slow down, I had no choice, wipe out, start all over,

I rely on what I call my G3 1/2 Mac, the 1st G4 model built on a G3 mother board. This computer has never been attacked, the firewall in OS 10.4.9 is quite effective. I have no anti-virus programs running. My Primitive Container had a server firewall, a router firewall, computer firewall, plus Ad-aware and Spy Bot running. These programs caught nasty stuff everytime I went out on the ‘Net even when i skype’d.

After reading the google article you posted, I figured now would be a good time as any to bring up the computer security questions. I assume you have installed all sorts of security programs if you rely on a Primitive Container with Windoze.
If you use Mac that would bring a huge sigh of relief for me. If you ran yer uplink to yer ‘Net provider thru a Mac Server to prevent yer site from getting hacked is another plus. If you knew if yer local ‘Net access provider routed his uplink to the telecom serving 0z used a Mac server would improve chances of avoiding the nasty stuff in cyberspace.

Do you have any links to Google directly so that we can find out which sites they detected as being contaminated? That would be a big help. I’m not sure if Wired News or similar sites have any more info than yer posted link.

My kids go out and use the usual video and chat sites they have been using for years. They used to use our windoze Primitive Container, but I got them Mac laptops they connect by way of wireless LAN. They tell me their buddies, had their modem captured, and a 3,000 dollar phone bill as a result.

That cured us of using a windoze Primitive Container, other than skype.

    1. Just a hunch
Sounds like you need Spybot Search & Destroy. After downloading, switch to Advanced Mode so you can click to block known bad sites. It’s free, but it’s such an indespensible program that I recommend you make a donation to Patrick, the guy who wrote it.

Btw, every time you update, you’ll need to click on Immunize, and then also click the other Immunize button at the top of that page.

      Kat
