Who are you people?

Quote of the Day:

Who are you people?

Roy Neary (‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’)

Editor
  1. Asteroid warning system
I think that the fact the system was able to spot the Rosetta space craft heading at speed towards Earth indicates that the system works: if it had not detected the craft, then it would be fair to criticise the system.

Well done!, I say, as the craft is only the size of a small car.

    1. Spotting the darned things is just half of the job.
The other half is figuring out WHAT TO DO if some big-ass pebble comes dangerously close to our playground…

      1. but first
But first you have to see that a threat is coming. If you can’t even see that, then she system is useless.

Of course you have to be able to do something about it when the thing actually comes.

But this threat, over the next 10000 years, is much more certain than global warming, or nuclear war. And looking for oncoming rocks is comaparatively cheap. A good program to look for these things is cheaper than, say, maintaining a group of five MiG-29s, per year.

Much cheaper than buying an Airbus 380 for personal luxury use, as one Saudi prince did last week.

        1. Moon base
That would be a good job for any future moon base: A detection system of killer asteroids.

  2. Close Encounters
One of my favourite movies of all time 🙂

For my part, I wouldn’t doubt it one second, and, like Roy Neary, I would jump inside that ship.

Of course, later in my life I read books like Communion and all those others, but still, since this is a fantasy based solely on the movie, I would go with the aliens… of Spielberg, who were so childlike and cool.

I remember Spielberg being interviewed for the Special Edition DVD, telling how that scene reflected his way of thinking when he was A YOUNG MAN. Now that he’s a bit older and ALSO a father, the decission to leave all behind would be much, much harder.

So how about you guys? 🙂
