Happy 101st birthday to Dr Albert Hoffman (I don’t blame him for anything). Why not celebrate with a signed portrait poster by the incomparable Alex Grey (click on ‘Posters’ in in the shop)…

Quote of the Day:

In America attendance at church is much higher, and it convulses the body politic because, unable to fulfill it’s sacral function, the church has become simply a lobbying force for fundamentalist social policy…I think we should level [churches] to the ground and start over.

1. Hot down south
You should move to Melbourne, Greg, it’s been one of our hottest summers on record. 28.6 degrees celsius last night. 😛

And I’ll move to Queensland. I prefer cooler temperate climates where it rains.

PS Don’t throw your underwear on stage when Tool play.

1. yuk
underwear on the stage in this wheather………..

and when has it rained? Well maybe where Greg is. I’m only 2 hours away from Brizzy and have had no rain since 12th December. And very hot. But I feel for you Victorians with the fires and all.

1. Hot Days Out
and when has it rained? Well maybe where Greg is. I’m only 2 hours away from Brizzy and have had no rain since 12th December. And very hot.
Here in Brizvegas we’ve barely had a day over 30 degrees (Celsius, for the benefit of the Americans out there). Normally this time of year we’re reaching for 40 on occasion. Perhaps it’s saving up for the Big Day Out….

Kind regards,
Greg

1. Portlandia Weather
The weather here in Portland Oregon since the first week in November has been wetter and snowier then normal. We have been hit by about 5-6 tropical storms rain/flooding and very high wind storms(70+ mile winds). The first week in Nov. it was actually a Hurricane, yes a HURRICANE! It was not named only because there is nothing set up to name storms this far north. Satillite pics show a solid eye and storm wall. It was scary to look at.Of course the media ignored this. Today we have snow in the valley. I remember that if the warm ocean water pump was disrupted in the atlantic, from artic melt that parts of europe would become cooler and snowier. Why can’t the same thing happen on this side of the pacific?

2. Hot up north too …
Up here in near-northern Canada it’s the first no-snow Christmas I remember in over 25 years; nearly midway to spring, and we still have less than a few cm of snow in the yard (it’s usually a few meters by now).

If I remember the NASA ozone charts correctly, your cold-weather solution is really quite simple: Just dump more hydrocarbons into your air and the skies will open up to all sorts of extra cosmic radiations! You best hurry too, or you’ll miss out on all the extra-special 2012 galactic-core baths!

3. Mid winter here and…
…we’re having our coffee on pavement-side tables at coffee shops. It’s rather chilly though when the sun sets. Rains got sparse and more intense so far. Maybe it’s time to move to New Zealand? [the exact opposite place on the planet!]

1. ummm, yeah…..
good one Kathrinn.

2. Color Blindness
I’m a cartographer, and when I make a product for public consumption I make sure that all of the colors are a different shade of gray. I’m wondering if this actually makes a difference and any other tips would be helpful as well.

1. Using techniques
such as slanted lines (left or right) or dots and dashes, just dots or just dashes which overlay the color helps. Using color say for instance tone or shade, always try to use opposing color wheel selections (pantone) when border definition is required. —————————–Truth is stranger than fiction.

3. Thesis into procrastination
Thanks Greg for the article, that was interesting. Many years (decades actually) ago the company I worked for had a symposium on procrastination and how it affected quality and quantity. My particular question I posed to the panel of experts was how to get my employees to show up on time and that these same people tended to have the highest absenteeism rate. The answer I was given was that procrastinators are extremely selfish as well as deluded. They perceive their time as far more important, their interests or personal endeavors while “on the clock” above the company that pays them a salary far above (usually double or more) the national average. That the consequences for their chronic behavior had little or no effect on them. In the end most of the people I had problems with were transferred out by orders of upper management, sometimes they moved laterally going into another department or they up and quit. I was thankful they were gone to be honest.

Time was of the essence on so many projects, it had to be done well and when the slackers failed to show up the job was left for others who already were doing multiple tasks such as myself and the group leaders. It usually mucked things up but after a while I simply would not count them (the procrastinators) in the equation. That way when they did show up and did do some work, even though typically inferior, it put us up near or over the top. That kept the ones who were doing well in the focus for promotion as essentially they were doing the job of two or more people. You could count on them, they rarely if ever complained and when a problem arose they would be the first ones to help with a solution or on occasions offer a solution. The procrastinators then stood out like a sore thumb. It was easy to locate and target problems of work flow because it came down to their sloppy work habits. Intelligence regarding the procrastinators had no sway there as these were well educated people, just their priorities were some place else, certainly not on their job or their career. Then there were the ones who were always on time and were never absent but they clearly failed to perform (quality and/or quantity) but that is another but entirely different problem. —————————–Truth is stranger than fiction.
