News Briefs 14-09-2004

To enhance your viewing experience, I recommend Soundgarden played loudly through a pair of headphones. Well it worked for me anyhow…

  • SETI supremo Seth Shostak takes New Scientist to task for last week’s alien message controversy.
  • Reason for Genesis probe crash revealed in exclusive pictures.
  • Forget the Andromeda Strain, think about the Genesis Strain. And soon the sequel, the Stardust Strain? Perhaps do a Lord of the Rings and shoot a trilogy, ending with the Mars Strain. I’m off to begin a script.
  • A new type of calendar for your fridge – all the known near-Earth approaches for the coming 33 years.
  • High strangeness in Canadian cattle corn with Linda Moulton Howe. Hmm, that didn’t come out right. Sure does make for some visual imagery though…

  • Didn’t y’all know that ET has been visiting in secret for centuries? You would think they could at least impart advanced knowledge of decent song lyrics.
  • And forget the liberal media, or the right-wing media conspiracy. It’s the aliens controlling the airwaves. I knew no human could come up with some of that reality television stuff.
  • Randi’s weekly attempt to save us from our own ignorance. Thanks dude.
  • Skeptic claims that RSI does not and never did exist.
  • Here’s the real science: amateur hurricane-busters suggest giant fans, or nuclear explosions, to divert hurricanes.

  • Cannabis truly helps multiple sclerosis sufferers.
  • Robot spider walks on water. For its encore it changed water into wine. Audience not impressed, “done before” they say.
  • Ghosts are real to more than half of Taiwan’s population.
  • How do you sort the miracles from the not-so-miraculous? Have a read of The Miracle Detective by Randall Sullivan (Amazon US and UK).

  • Tsunamis – just one of the hazards of living on Earth.

Thanks Pam.

Quote of the Day:

My fleeting contact with high finance resulted in serious doubts concerning business as it was being conducted. It was apparent that materialism was in complete control of the economic structure, the final objective of which was for the individual to become part of a system providing an economic security at the expense of the human soul, mind, and body.

  1. The Moon as Noah’s Ark?
Without being too cynical, I need to remind the scientific community that preserving the DNA strain that brought about the Earth’s demise, just so they could have the opportunity to do it again, probably isn’t a great idea. Doo-Dah, Doo-Dah.

    khefre

“..this is the way the world ends; not with a bang, but with a whimper.” T.S. Eliot

  2. Nefertiti’s Dance
If the claims in the news article are an example of the claims in the book, then one hopes Ms Fletcher has proof for each one of them. I sincerely hope so.

Nefertiti Co-regent and ruled after Akhenaten’s death in her own rite? Akhenaten dying in 1336BC? (some authors believe he was exiled and returned as Moses after the 19th Dynasty had taken power – Laurence Gardner for one) Erotic dance with blind musicians? Hopefully the evidence is beyond doubt and in abundance.

  3. Iron Age Tourism
Golly! 750 quid to cook your own food, sleep on the ground with bugs &c., wear scratchy clothing, get filthy, and wander about aimlessly. Why not just join the Army? (BTW, they pay you). I love the recreational director’s remark:

“Nobody knows what it was like in the Iron Age but these are the activities that they might have had.” Wot?

    Regards,
    khefre

“I mean I’d like to be that thin, but without all the flies and death and stuff.” Mariah Carey on Ethiopia

      1. Satirical remark
Not really. I should have clarified that by labeling it a satirical “quote” spread by tabloid publications and media. Just another example of how “a lie told enough times with enthusiasm becomes the truth..”

Apologies to Mariah Carey and her fans.

        Regards,
        khefre

    1. so it costs 750 quid to spe

so it costs 750 quid to spend a week living the iron age life that might not be to much to pay for a week of hands on training to teach you the fundimentals of how you gona be living when your job has been outsourced to India or China, we got millions of people overhere in the US taking the same vacation, and they never had the training that this program offers.

You might consider seeing if you could talk your government in to footing the bill for everyone, good training for the on coming One World Government’s No Job no Work Socity.

      1. Disgusting actions
That is an absolute tragedy, the loss of the jobs by out-sourcing.They’ve even got me speaking the lingo.
It is happening here in Oz as well. I am happy for those people in third world countries who are getting the jobs but what does it say about the governments that would do such a dastardly thing to the people who voted them in.
I am sorry you have lost your job, it is an unforgivable thing to happen.
I always say a country is only as rich as it’s poorest member and our countries are getting poorer every day.
