Guillermo Del Toro Trilogy

No doubt due to his complete lack of upcoming film projects, my favourite Mexican film director Guillermo Del Toro is set to move into the book industry with a 'vampire trilogy' to be published through HarperCollins:

The first book in the as-yet-untitled series, 'The Strain', concerns the invasion of New York City by a vampiric virus, mysteriously emanating from a plane touching down at JFK airport... The Strain will have a worldwide publication date in summer 2009, with the release dates of the following two books to be confirmed.

Del Toro sounds like the kind of guy that would be right at home here on TDG (I'm sure RPJ would buy him a beer or three).

I would buy him 3 cases of Tequila, but since his family is from Guadalajara, I'm pretty sure he knows where to get better stuff than I do ;-)

I think it's only fitting that he is writing a vampire trilogy, since his opera prima (first work) was 'Cronos' a vampire movie he made with 50 bucks or less, but paved the way for all of his success—it also began his fruitful relationship with Ron Perlman.

If you haven't seen 'Cronos', I suggest you put a remedy to that, pronto!

Richard Matheson already wrote that novel. It was called "I Am Legend." If you've only seen the misbegotten film version with Will Smith, read the book. It's completely different and starkly beautiful and painful.

I would really love to see a movie version of Dan Simmons' Hyperion/Endymion cycle, and I think Del Toro would do that justice, but it looks like he's fairly well busy for about the next generation or so.
