Daily Grail Anthology Title

I’m having a great time putting together this Daily Grail anthology, with some wonderful contributions already received and the rest expected in the next couple of weeks – topics include the ancient ‘cult centre’ of Caral in Peru, the ‘dark side of the paranormal’, the Templars, Francis Dashwood and the Hellfire Society, Roswell, Ouija boards and UFO contactees (to name a few). Contributors are all people whose research and writing I respect greatly, so the anthology will have both quality and quantity of TDG-related material – from alternative history, to Forteana, consciousness, the paranormal and cryptozoology.

Anyhow, one thing that I’m still undecided on is the name. I do have a list already of about 15 possible titles (ranging from the oh-so-simple ‘Daily Grail Anthology’, to obscure latin words which sum up the content), but before I set about choosing one, I thought I’d throw the question out to readers – do you have a suggestion for the name? Remember that it needs to echo the content, and also that the anthology will hopefully become a regular release (more a journal, than anthology). Perhaps once people have had their say, we can put up a poll for people to choose their favourite, with the best contributed title earning a free copy of the anthology. Would love to hear your thoughts!

  1. maybe pretty ordinary but
how about…..”Anthology of mysteries” journals of unexplained and conjecture.

What can I say….try some shrooms Greg and all will be revealed.

      1. Quintessence
Without wishing to insult anyone’s intelligence, here’s the rationale:

        Quintessence
        1. The pure, highly concentrated essence of a thing.
        2. The purest or most typical instance
        3. In ancient and medieval philosophy, the fifth and highest essence after the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water, thought to be the substance of the heavenly bodies and latent in all things.

It has also recently aquired a new meaning:
The new buzz word in cosmology these days, Quintessence, some cosmologists say, is an exotic kind of energy field that pushes particles away from each other, overpowering gravity and the other fundamental forces.

        1. * now with added consistency *
OK, giving in to the ‘consistency’ camp, how about these?

          ‘The Quintessential Daily Grail’

          or

          ‘The Daily Grail – Quintessence’

  2. What’s in a name?
Just to give an idea of my own thinking, a few of the titles I’ve come up with are ‘Arcana’, ‘Mirabilis’, and ‘Strange Lands’ (among others).

The other possibility is to just call it Sub Rosa, and make it a follow-up to the mag (which I’m having trouble finding time to work on at the moment). However, I would like to keep that separate, as one day I’d love to make Sub Rosa a real print mag.

    Kind regards,
    Greg

Having a successful book series called Sub Rosa could make the job of publishing the magazine much easier. That’s definitely a positive to using Sub Rosa for the books, Greg. I’m for Sub Rosa. The magazine and books are separate ideas, but there’s no reason why they can’t compliment each other under the same name. They’d promote each other.

      1. A title
One thing that’s very annoying about mainstream publishers is that writers come up with marvellous titles, only for the publisher to change it to the simplest. Even more annoying is the fact that they’re right – simple titles are more explanatory regarding the contents, and they sell better.
        So how about something like:
The Grail Trail and other Anomalies
If you go for Sub Rosa, it would be best to add ‘Editions,’ thus separating it from the magazine, whilst still being related.

        I’m fanatical about moderation

  3. Sub Rosa should be included
Sub Rosa should be included somewhere, either in super- or subtitle. Perhaps it would work best in subtitle, leaving the anthologies to more or less stand on their own.

I agree it would be opportune to have anthology and magazine refer to each other in some hyper-publication. (The alternative reminds me of musicians’ side-projects that go unnoticed because of nonrecognition.)

As for the name of the anthology, I support the poll option with the coiner of the selected title receiving a free copy.

This is very exciting. I’m looking forward to this!

  4. 1) Rosseta2) Cryptex3)
    1) Rosseta

    2) Cryptex

    3) Agarthi

    4) Encyclopaedia Etherea

Xibalba was a good option too 😉

PS: Cryptopedia just came to my head too.

  5. Mirabilis
This, of the sneak peek into your options, was my vote before I even looked it up (simply because it’s a great word). Looking it up heightened my enthusiasm.

The metaphors are amazing: the blooming of colorful knowledge at the last few moments before the dark night of the soul swallows the earth, the miracle of night-blooming flowers playing silent usher to the night spirit, blossoms opening thangka-colored eyes whose vision persists unobscured through the occulting night of dreamless darkness.

As always, alchemical blending of layer and meaning is the most potent. Form and spirit combine in fractal analogy, and as your publications display this reality so should the title condense a fractal to a single point. A title should intone, not just reference.

  6. My too sense
    Draughts From The Grail

In my humble opinion,The Grail is percieved to be a cup in the mind’s eye. One thirsts for knowledge (Gnosis) in order to gain wisdom (sophia) that the weary traveller (those on a true Grail quest), through the trek of life, seeks to parch a mighty thirst in a world barren of much that slacks this need to quench such a parched spirit.

    3. a current of air (usually coming into a chimney or room or vehicle) [syn: draft]

As one can plainly see, the word “draught” can be used in several ways in regard to material that the Daily Grail offers.

    1. good Pam….but
it can also mean…unfinnished…implied pre- to what could be, a rough sketch….not the finnished work…a sub-structure of the main…inferior to what is offered as the final artical.

Sorry…..I rant sometimes…..my suggestion was pretty lame…….so I should not be critical of yours.

      1. We are never finished
Dear floppy, Are we not in a state of flux and always yearning for change? Is that not the very state of humanity? Aiming for refinement of self? Just a few of my rambling thoughts, anyway floppy thanks for the rant, we all should rant a little!
Love, Pam —————————–Truth is stranger than fiction.

  7. Just my thought here
What is wrong with simply calling it “Daily Grail Anthology” with a sub-title perhaps of “in conjunction with Sub Rosa Magazine”, of “an adjunct to Sub Rosa Magazine” .

Wouldn’t that say everything that is needed and attach it firmly to its founding place without firing off at a tangent with some fancy title that could be associated with just anywhere?

    Regards, Kathrinn

      1. Agreed
I agree. If the books have a different name, then it’s going to be harder for the audience to associate the anthologies with TDG and Sub Rosa. There needs to be a common name linking all three. I spoke with a publishing lecturer today and that was her professional advice. Keep it simple. 😉

      2. yep
could do a mag version of this site….graphics and all the same….with anthology under it.
After all, this is an eye catching site.
Would have to be a few subtle changes though. But the main theme could be the same.

  8. my tuppenceworth..
    how about simply…

    The Daily Grail Treasury

…then add some of the featured subjects in a sub title so they’ll hit in Amazon searches (!)

looking forward to it (whatever it’s called)

    mark :]

  9. Name
    Rab advises that
since “The Edge Of Aqueerious” is probably out of the question; and “Sub Rosa” is a stretch – insofar as it does not quite pertain to some topics, such as interesting scientific theories & discoveries that few would want to be kept ‘secret’- despite the good idea that it be retained as a title/concept; and since the difference between the anthology and Sub Rosa is not terribly clear; a bit more discernment be exercised on the issue.

What is IT that attracts attention here? That is the question. It invites the quest, and guides it, once begun.
    A marvel, yet any marvel?

    1. Heh heh
I reckon three quarters of your suggestions were once scribbled madly on sheets of paper so many years ago by Greg prior to his decision to name “The Daily Grail.” I also reckon there should be an English Tavern called the Fork and Grail.

“Not all that a man reckons should thence come to a fruition.”
      ( … I think it was one of Wilde’s).

  11. What’s in a Name?
While I understand the logic in tying the title to the Daily Grail name, there are other points to consider. Firstly, selling to the Daily Grail audience alone will not make the anthology a success (despite the fact that we get 13,000 visitors per day, on past experience I’d imagine that more than 150 of that number purchasing the book would be a good effort). We also have to engage others – the Fortean Times audience, the ufological community, Coast to Coast AM listeners, and so on. As such, there is also a logic to naming the anthology in a way that is of interest to those outside the ‘in the know’ TDG crowd.

Still struggling with the best way forward here!

    Kind regards,
    Greg
